It is now 15 months since I left salaried work, and through the three temporary and freelance contracts which I've held in that time, I've met and worked with a number of other 'free spirits'. As I sat on a train the other day, I got to thinking what sort of animals would make the best temporary workers? Let's start with the ferret. Not quite in vogue these days, but one of a handful of animals to enter the language as a verb. Having been quite upset at being called a ferret, I have drawn comfort from telling myself that it was a compliment to my information retrieval skills (the ability to disappear off, down, what to others look like blind alleyways and quickly deliver the goods.) In this information illiterate world we all need efficient and effective 'ferrets'. Moving swiftly on ... one of my favourite animals from literature is Boxer (one of the cart horses) from Animal Farm he was 'universally respected for his steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work'. However, Boxer was not the brightest of animals. What about adding in a touch of owl, after all the simile does say 'as wise as an owl'. The owl, or Wol, in Winnie the Pooh was certainly clever, and on good days he could almost spell. As I was diagnosed as being dyslexic in my teens, he certainly was my role model. But, I think we need to add in an animal who has a sharper intellect than the cosy, homely owl of children's literature. What about the good old pig? (Apologies, we're back in Animal Farm). They are clever beasts, and a farm animal which man can use every part of, making them very economical. So, in good ol' Spike Milligan fashion, what sort of animal have we created? One which has the speed of a ferret to retrieve information, the steadiness of character and sheer hard work of Boxer, the wisdom of an owl, and the intelligence of a pig. All in all, agency staff should be very effective.
