However, many of these sites are poorly constructed or irrelevant to the job applied for. In the worst cases, sites can actually be damaging to the application, so before you include a link in your CV consider these points: The content ----------- Would you supply a set of family photos with your CV? Think twice about promoting your site if it's just family snaps and news about your kids. Definitely think twice if it's tales of drunken debauchery with your mates. Hobbies can be risky too. The employer may get you straight in for an interview if they too love Marvel comics, or poodles. Unfortunately, they are just as likely to be repelled. Are your hobbies related to your work? Fine. Stick them in. If not, keep it separate. Make sure the site is up to date. Blogs with no postings for six months look terrible. The content should be as work-related as possible, even if it is only your opinions on other people's work. This type of content is particularly valuable if you are trying to break into a field as it can make you look like an established commentator. The construction ---------------- Broken links are a big no-no. They frustrate the user and make you look sloppy. Run your site through a link checker and fix all those broken links. Spelling and grammar -- get them right. Web sites feel informal but you want your prospective employer to believe spelling is something that comes naturally to you. Make the site look professional. Unless HTML is a requirement of the job then the employer isn't interested in the quality of your HTML mark-up. They will, however, care if the site is in the style of "my first site". Just because you learnt how to make your own paper in a craft workshop doesn't mean you would ever dream of writing your CV on it. The same is true of Web sites. If your technical skills aren't up to producing a clean, professional Web site then borrow someone else's. There are plenty of free or cheap tools such as TypePad or Blogspot that will do the hard work for you. The context ----------- Remember you are applying for a job so what are you trying to demonstrate to your employer? If you are applying to the RNIB it might make sense to ensure your site meets their Web accessibility guidelines. An employer looking for an experienced indexer might expect to see some pretty good metadata on your pages. Read the job specification again and think about whether your site should demonstrate any of the requirements. Finally, remember that an employer may see your site even if you don't include a link in your application. Many prospective employers will stick your name in Google just to see what comes back.
