This question is often asked in job interviews, but often no-one - including the interviewer himself in his own case - actually knows the answer! The truth is that many highly successful people are in roles they never originally envisaged, and that opportunities and challenges come along that change the career paths we might otherwise have chosen for ourselves. What are we to do then? Should we choose a job with some long term aim in mind? Or should we first explore where our own qualities and resources could take us? Know yourself ------------- It is surprising how many people don't have a firm grasp of their own strengths and weaknesses, or of what makes them happy or miserable! And if they do, they don't always make the connection between these traits and their choice of job. As a result, many people find themselves in jobs they hate. So think about what your strengths are, and what you have enjoyed doing in the past. This doesn't just include work or academic achievements - after all, after a few years, real achievement depends as much on personal qualities as on paper qualifications. Are there particular transferable skills you would like to develop - perhaps writing, public speaking or number crunching? Perhaps you're a good organiser, have formidable social skills or are drawn to project management? Any job you take should enable you to at least have an opportunity to develop your innate abilities. Where will it all lead? ----------------------- Having some idea of what you're capable of and of the kind of environment in which you would flourish is just the starting point. If you know the general area you'd like to work in, it is then a case of finding a suitable role within that area, keeping your likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses in the back of your mind. Whichever job you choose will inevitably shape your future career direction in some way. It therefore makes sense to choose it wisely. And you only need to find one job at any one time ... Wait, and wait again -------------------- A friend of mine did nothing for six months after graduating other than browse the job adverts and wonder what to do. After six months he spotted an advertisement for an information job in a pharmaceutical company. He had a biomedical degree and loved writing, and while he liked interacting with people he wasn't particularly drawn to biomedical research or to marketing or commercial roles. He thought: "Here at last is a job I could do, and one I would feel comfortable doing". So he applied for it - along with 70 other applicants. It was the first job he had applied for, and the fact that he got it simply reflected the fact that it closely matched his strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes.
