These feelings may also be accompanied by a sense of guilt over the fact that you have a "good" job when many others do not. While boredom with your job may come and go, stronger signals that persist over time are symptoms of true burnout. Ignoring them could have serious consequences for your career, personal life, and health. It is possible that by the time the symptoms of burnout begin to affect your work and even your personal life, you may already know what you suffer from. Symptoms of job burnout may include: * Increased absenteeism * Decrease in effective job performance * Decrease in professional self-esteem * Decrease in the ability to think creatively or concentrate on detail-oriented tasks * Disturbance in sleep habits or sleep that is not refreshing * Increased susceptibility to illness and depression * Increased irritability professionally and personally * Restlessness on the job. The causes of job burnout will vary from sector to sector within the field and may include: * Lack of adequate staffing * Longevity that breeds over-familiarity with a job of any kind * The necessity of providing an always-cheerful face to information-seeking patrons * Being under- or over-challenged at work * The perception, whether true or not, that your work is not appreciated or valued * Keeping up with the myriad of frequent changes in information media formats. Once you have determined that you are, in fact, suffering from burnout and want to do something about it, it is important to identify whether you are interested in continuing to work in your present field in a similar position, working in another sector of your present field, or changing fields altogether. Begin by spending a few days perusing listings for jobs within all sectors of your field. Can you visualize yourself in some of those positions? Does the thought of working at any of those jobs excite you or bore you? Take this opportunity as well to learn about possibilities in other sectors of your field. Perhaps you are a librarian. Have you considered working for a non-profit group that supports your industry? Or how about moving from public librarianship to business or academic librarianship? If none of these possibilities help reignite your interest in your field, perhaps it is time to think about changing fields altogether. In the next instalment, we will look at how to combat the symptoms of job burnout with the goal of enabling you to keep a healthy and positive mindset during the period when you are preparing to make a job or career move. > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michelle Noel is the Dean of Vise Library at Cumberland University in the state of Tennessee, U.S.A. where she has served for twelve years. > = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Latest Job Listings =================== Here are the latest additions to FreePint Jobs in the last two weeks at http://www.jinfo.com/ To receive it by email or to modify your subscription, visit http://www.jinfo.com/subs/ or email support@jinfo.com Please forward this Jobs Update to anyone who may find it useful. > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - E-Librarian (added 15th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5228 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - South East, United Kingdom Information Officer x 2 (added 15th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5227 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - Central, United Kingdom Legal Knowledge Manager (added 15th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5226 Recruiter: Glen Recruitment Location: London, United Kingdom Research Manager (added 12th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5225 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - Central, United Kingdom Part-time Information Services Administrator (added 12th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5224 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - City, United Kingdom Information Services Advisor (added 12th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5223 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - City, United Kingdom Journals & Information Assistant (added 11th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5222 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - City, United Kingdom Information Assistant (added 11th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5221 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - Central, United Kingdom Information Access Officer (added 11th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5220 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - City, United Kingdom Information Officer (added 11th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5219 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: Liverpool, United Kingdom Assistant Librarian (added 10th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5218 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: Northamptonshire, United Kingdom Know-how Paralegal (added 8th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5216 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - City, United Kingdom Records Assistants x2 (added 5th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5213 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - North, United Kingdom Knowledge Management Coordinator (added 5th May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5210 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: London - North, United Kingdom Product Manager (added 3rd May 2006) URL: http://www.jinfo.com/go/j5209 Recruiter: Sue Hill Recruitment and Services Limited Location: Central England, United Kingdom > = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = To subscribe to the Jinfo Newsletter or to modify your subscription, login to your account at http://www.jinfo.com/subs/ or send an email to .
