Plus, comment from Greg Simidian, MD, Perfect Information. > = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = "Down-time career development" Written by Trudy Turner In the summer of 2005, I crossed a burning bridge and decided to take a redundancy package, after the health organisation I was working for merged with another, and became something much less aligned to my personal beliefs. At 43, redundant is a perilous place to be, and I knew I would have to stay energised and focused to get myself back on track as an employed person. I adopted a number of strategies to ensure I could remain positive and employable. Soul searching -------------- I got my employers to fund a 2 day residential course as part of my redundancy package, exploring my skills and interests, and the patterns in my life enabling or preventing me from achieving my personal and professional potential. The course was inspirational . Voluntary work/Internships -------------------------- I applied for (and got) an internship at a national charity concerned with sustainable development. This achieved two goals for the price of one ... I was avoiding a gap in my C.V. and could work for an organisation whose objectives were sound. It also enabled me to get some experience of working in a new sector and make contacts which might be useful in future. Working on your networks ------------------------ Staying in touch with ex-colleagues is a good plan. This counts whenever you move on, and pays off when you are out of the workplace. I had some good colleagues who kept me up to date with developments in the sector and forwarded opportunities for short term contract work which might be relevant. I had recently completed an MSc and stayed in touch with my tutors and co-students. Professional circuits --------------------- Having recently achieved a first class Masters degree, I decided to tout this around a bit and applied to attend several conferences with my work. I also proposed a journal article based on my research. Short (and free) courses ------------------------ I spotted a business course on offer in the local paper. The course was subsidised with European funding - so it was free of charge. I met lots of people who were working to establish businesses locally. Also, a number of the tutors were very helpful. This helped me build my business knowledge, but it also made me realise the business world was not for me. I still see some of the people I met on the course. Temporary contracts ------------------- Don't sniff at temporary work. I took on a six month contract at a local hospital library and information service doing information skills training. This was immensely enjoyable ... I learned a lot from the experience. Two weeks before the end of the contract I was appointed to my retiring manager's role. I am now doing work which I enjoy and believe in, with a brilliant team. The journey has been scary and painful at times, but having reached the other side of the burning bridge, I haven't felt so fulfilled and happy for many a year. Look after yourself ------------------- Finally, don't underestimate the emotional difficulties of being unemployed (whether you have chosen to be or not). Talk to friends and family if you are struggling to cope. Consider seeking professional counselling. Try therapies (like acupuncture) to address any anxieties.
