The experience is much akin to a stack of holiday brochures to a prospective holiday maker or a bundle of estate agents particulars to a prospective house buyer. Each and everyone has to be taken seriously, sifted, weighed and classified but it can be so mind-numbing. Another problem is that the selection process is an education in itself that often alters original ideas. Take the holiday brochure. You may have originally wanted a villa on the Algarve but the 5* hotel in Menorca for the same price looks pretty good. Or the original detached house idea could be achieved by a wing of a country house. The same is true of job candidates. Someone who has demonstrated the ability to take on new challenges may be preferable to another candidate who has spent many years doing the same thing, albeit the most relevant job attribute. Filling most job vacancies is a very "hit and miss" process. It becomes even more complicated at the interview stage. A colleague spent a week in the USA interviewing carefully selected MBA graduates from Ivy League business schools only to find that any spark of creativity they might have had been extracted from them by the education process. He was convinced that they could all "push paper across a desk faster than most" but none could do what was needed i.e. think "out of the box". If you want your CV to buy you an interview, put yourself in the interviewer's shoes. One page is enough and tailor it to the job offered by emphasising relevant skills and expertise. Do not send a tired old "standard" CV. Include a coloured photograph, add colour to headings and include lots of "white space" even at the expense of font size. All this makes your CV more "readable". Personal details can be summarised under your name. For example, Jane Smith 31, married, British, graduate Be aware that canny employers look for gaps so cover ALL the time from full-time education. That means adding months i.e. March 2001 to December 2004 NOT 2001 to 2004. Gaps are worrying so plug them. Do not write fiction but do make the truth as interesting as possible. "Organised the firm's Summer Ball" is better than "Member of the Social Committee". If you really want to "hit them (employers) between the eyes" use a MindMap see . These are sometimes called "spider diagrams". They present information in a highly readable graphic format.
