How I crossed from one sector to another
========================================
The idea for the article came from attending a workshop held by the
CILIP group Careers and Development. In a question and answer session
with Sue Hill, from Sue Hill Recruitment, came the question:
"If a person has been working in the same job for a number of years,
will they be able to work at something totally different or in a
different type of company to the one they are currently employed in?"
I have been working in the information sector for 5 years. I began
working for a small company called European Marketing Systems, in
London, as a database administrator. The company compiles and provides
mailing lists for business use only. In time my job expanded so that
as well as maintaining the lists, I did the research too. I had to
learn how to seek information using primary and secondary sources as
the company does not subscribe to any business databases.
I did an MA in Information Services Management at London Metropolitan
University in September 2003 and finished in January 2005. As part of
my course, I did a work placement for 5 weeks and went to a law
library at Russell Jones and Walker. I learnt how to do loose-leaf
filing and circulating journals. Although I did not do any research, I
gained some insight into how a law library works.
In November 2004, I started work as a library assistant at the Women's
Library which is part of London Metropolitan University, but I didn't
have any academic library knowledge at all, and my only library
experience was through my work placement. I was given the job because
of the following reasons: I had a little bit of library experience; I
had done a professional qualification (although this was not necessary
for the post of library assistant); I had experience of doing research
and I had customer service skills gained from working in shops many
years ago.
Yes, shop skills, most people I have come across have worked in a shop
or within a customer focused environment. A colleague of mine at
the Women's Library said that she had failed to get her first job in a
public library because she could not get the panel to understand that
there was not a lot of difference between working in a shop and a
library. Different products, but both provide a service, and therefore
require the same set of skills.
To do an information job requires a person to have the necessary basic
skills and it helps to have a qualification and know how to look for
information etc. Jobs do not differ that much and with a bit of
training a person can do anything.
