Business Research Executive, UK > = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Interview day blues (things they don't tell you about in books ...) =================================================================== The big day has arrived. You've done all the things you're supposed to: read up on the company and the role, memorised your CV, worked out what they might ask you, and thought of a few questions to ask. You're perfectly groomed right down to your shiny shoes. The last thing you want is to blow it by making some silly mistakes. Getting to the interview site ----------------------------- Never underestimate how long it will take to get somewhere. Even if the journey is very similar to your daily commute, always build in extra time especially if you are doing it at a slightly different time of day. There might be a longer queue for tickets than you expected, you might miss a train or need to let a couple pass because they are too crowded. I once had to go to an unfamiliar tube station and was confronted by a choice of eight possible exits. Needless to say, I chose the wrong one and ended up going the VERY long way round and turned up with a minute to spare and looking like something the cat had dragged in which was not quite the impression I wanted to create! Even if you think you are familiar with the area you are going to, don't take anything for granted. I went to an interview somewhere I thought I knew like the back of my hand and then spent 10 minutes wandering around completely disorientated and like I'd never seen the place before in my life! Interview nerves can do that to you. Double-check a map before you leave. One building or two? -------------------- If you are going to a large company, it is quite possible that they might have more than one site and they may not be too far away from each other perhaps even across the road. Usually, you should be given full details of which building to go to but make double sure it's the right one you are going to and not one that's at the other side of the city. At the building --------------- Once in the right building, you will probably have to clear some level of security which could be signing in as a visitor but also possibly having your bag checked. In buildings which are occupied by several companies, there may also be two levels of reception; one for the building and then one for the actual organisation you are visiting. Leave time for both these things. In reception ------------ When you are in the final reception before you are called for the interview, don't look down, look around. Watch the people going in and out. The staff - what are they wearing, how do they behave towards each other? Are they formal or informal? These are all clues to the culture. Would you fit in? Could you see yourself walking in and out of that organisation everyday? Also, pick up any literature such as brochures and leaflets. They may be useful for a second interview or to glean a last minute nugget for the interview you're about to go into. At the end ---------- On the way out, don't forget to hand in your visitor badge, if you have been given one, and sign out if this is required. > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
