At the Interview
----------------
The interview is one of the most important phases of the recruitment
process. For the employer the interview provides an opportunity to
meet candidates, pose questions, and make a more informed decision as
to the person's suitability for the post. Likewise, the candidate has
an opportunity to establish their compatibility with the post as well
as a chance to 'sell themselves' to the potential employer.
However, other forces sometimes cloud the interview, spoiling its
potential as a recruitment platform. Insufficient preparation,
nervousness, poor comportment, unsuitable attire, etc. give recruiters
a bad impression and this can immediately swing the recruiter's
attention into unfavourable mode. The candidate should view the
interview as an opportunity to showcase their talents, and be careful
not to jeopardise the opportunity by neglecting to pay attention to
certain behavioural and presentation points.
In preparing for an interview, the candidate should research the
company or organisation and be aware of its mission and major
programmes. Note especially any activities or resources related to
the post for which you have applied. Carefully go through the job
description and requirements and map your relevant experiences onto
them. Anticipate possible questions about your suitability for the
post and prepare answers. Think of examples of relevant activities in
which you have been involved and be ready to describe them during the
interview.
Further tips for being prepared include preparing answers to questions
that are often asked in interviews, for example, 'where do you see
yourself in 5 years time', 'do you like working individually or as
part of a team', etc. You should also have one or two intelligent
questions prepared to ask the interviewers, for example: questions
about organisation's programmes, staff development, future direction
of the company, etc. If you want to ask about terms and conditions it
is advisable to establish whether or not this is the correct forum for
this by asking the panel if you should address these questions to them
or to their Human Resources department.
Being nervous at an interview is natural, and is not necessarily
completely a bad thing. A certain amount of nervousness can serve to
stimulate the adrenalin, keeping one alert and responsive during the
process. However, it can also retard the interview performance.
Techniques such as taking long steady breaths beforehand help to keep
one calm, as does constantly taking stock of the situation and
remembering the purpose of the interview, why one wants the post, etc.
Arriving a little early (but not too early) allows you time to get
settled, do some breathing exercises, and enter the interview in a
calm state of mind. Remember it is an artificial situation and is
uncomfortable for the interview panel as well as for you.
Once you start the process you will usually begin to relax and focus
on convincing the panel that you are the right person for the job.
Good preparation will stand to you here, as will good comportment.
Try to smile and behave in a confident manner, without coming across
as pushy or giggly. Use your repertoire of experience to illustrate
points but be concise and don't resort to anecdotes or jokes.
If you have been asked to give a presentation, be sure to have checked
in advance as to what technology is available to you to present your
piece. Practice several times in front of a mirror before the day,
this will prove very useful when you are presenting. It is important
that you do not read every word of the presentation as this will bore
the interviewers. Instead be familiar enough with the content to look
up at least intermittently and deliver whilst looking at the panel
members. Try to make your presentation interesting, and use, (but do
not overuse), pictures, graphs, etc. to lighten the text. Also be
sure to keep to the prescribed subject and time allowed.
Dressing for an interview is very important because inappropriate
clothing tells a lot about a person. Wearing jeans and trainers to an
interview may be acceptable in some situations, for example: student
jobs in universities, etc. However, this kind of clothing would
constitute unsuitable attire for many interview settings. Do your
homework and find out what kind of company it is before deciding what
to wear. Make sure that what you wear is smart, comfortable, clean
and pressed. Pay attention to personal hygiene also - dirty nails and
untidy hair are a definite 'no no'!
Finally, the interview provides you with an opportunity to convince
the interview panel that you are the right person for the job. It is
important to keep this in mind, remain positive and remember that the
panel are not there to trick you, but instead are hoping that you will
suit their requirements for the post.
