This can be a challenging prospect but if you are prepared to be flexible it can result in a successful outcome in terms of career and job prospects. I found myself in this situation a few years ago. I had moved to London from Paisley, Scotland, in 1987 for my first professional post after library school and worked there for 13 years, mainly in the NHS as a medical librarian. In 2000 I was made redundant and decided to move back to Scotland. I realized I was taking a risk since there are far fewer job opportunities for medical librarians there than in the Home Counties. I had three fixed-term jobs and a period of unemployment before being offered a permanent post in a public library. I learned several things from this experience: 1. Be flexible in your job search. My previous experience was in health care librarianship but I realized that I needed to widen my job search to other sectors such as schools, colleges, and law libraries. My first post north of the border was as a medical database searcher but the next was as a cataloguer for a university research project in Edinburgh. I also had to be willing to travel out with my local area for work in order to gain experience for the future. 2. Make use of periods of unemployment. I was unemployed for 6 months after the first post ended but I made use of this time, working as a volunteer cataloguer for a theological college and doing freelance précis writing for a hospital researcher. 3. Build on experience gained in temporary posts. Since I had two temporary cataloguing posts I decided to use the experience gained to re-focus my career from healthcare librarianship to cataloguing. Moving from one part of the UK to another forces you to rethink employment options. Experience gained in MARC cataloguing at Napier University and the Department for International development helped me to gain my current post. 4. Make use of contacts before you move. Contacts I had made at a clinical guidelines project in Edinburgh while working for my last London employer proved useful in securing a job at that organisation when I moved back to Scotland. I started my job at Inverclyde Libraries in January 2002, a temporary post that was made permanent following a re-organisation of the library service. My cataloguing experience in the last two posts proved very useful since I was involved in the preparation work to convert the library catalogue to MARC format and am now undertaking retrospective cataloguing of records for the Scottish Union Catalogue. It was tempting at times to give up and move back prior to this job starting but my persistence has paid off. >From running a small medical library as a 'one-man-band' to cataloguing in a public library has involved a lot of changes for me. I have had to re-focus my career in order to stay in Scotland.
