Ha! Anyone on both the hiring and the hired ends can tell you CVs do matter. Employers study them hard when they get them, and that's easier to do when they're in an electronic format. You're not far from producing an e-CV, since you probably have a copy stored on your computer somewhere. However, before you send it around, remember that it's probably in a format that doesn't always work with an employer's computer system -- the whole Mac vs. PC thing. Attachments from programs such as Microsoft Word can also be mistaken as viruses and are automatically bounced. The upshot? Your CV may never make it to the intended party. Electro-compatibility --------------------- Rich Text Format (RTF) files can break down this computer barrier. RTF is a document type that supports simple formatting, such as bold and italics, but still can be read by various systems. An easy way of making an RTF version of your CV is to go to the Save As function in your word processor and select RTF as the file type. ASCII (pronounced ASS-key) is just a fancy name for text. It's the vanilla of electronic CVs: It goes with anything, but it's plain. Putting your CV into ASCII is minimizing it to the max. No underlines, no bolds, no italics -- little more than capitals and periods. But ASCII files can be read by nearly any word processor, and many employers request attachments be e-mailed in this format. Text is wonderfully basic, but if you use it, you need to come up with a style and format that is both easy to read and showcases your abilities. A few tips to keep in mind when rendering your CV in text: * Align everything to the left * Use capitals instead of bold * Put everything on a separate line Put It in the Bank ------------------ Most job sites offer to post your CV for you, allowing employers to leaf through the submissions on their system. It's hard to know how well these CVs are received, but Gary Resnikoff, president of CareerMagazine , says, "We have 250,000 to 300,000 visitors each month, and collectively they download close to 100,000 CVs". Although going this route might save you work, be wary of the following: * First, only the employers who are looking at that service can see your CV. Your dream employer might not be looking for you. * Second, keep it up to date. Remember that promotion you thought you were going to get, so you thought you'd just include it on your CV only to find it fell through? A potential employer will think you're telling porkies. * Fourth, if you're trying to keep your job search quiet at work, understand that your boss might stumble onto your CV in one of these job banks. Going Online ------------ You have free web space at your disposal. You should have your CV online. Not only do online CVs save you the cost of fancy paper, they're whenever a connection to the internet is. Plus, if you have any clips or have done any work on a website, an online CV is the perfect vehicle for showing off. Now, you might have learned the virtues of sound and animated gifs, which can make your cyber-CV look and sound like a cartoon, but think simple when making an online CV. You can use style and panache, just bear in mind these versions get printed out and passed around, and flashy graphics look lame on paper. If you remember that simplicity is the key to making it easy for employers to learn about you, you'll have your e-CV up and working for you in no time.
