A real shock - certainly not a planned career move! Unfortunately, the market wasn't too good hence it didn't take long to realise that finding a new job wasn't going to be easy. As soon as I knew that it was going to happen, I registered with all the agencies. Plus my redundancy package included Outplacement. So for three months I continued to commute up to London making the most of all the workshops, consultancy, etc. Evenings were spent checking websites, vacancy supplements, newspapers, etc. as well as joining Knowledge/Information groups, seminars, etc. - to do the networking bit! So three years on and back in work, what lessons have I learnt? Obviously a lot is dependent on your position, seniority, skill set and state of the market at the time. But the following reflect my key learnings: * Don't allow Outplacement to get in the way of finding work. In hindsight it just delayed the inevitable - although I met a great bunch of guys who truly understood what it was to be out of work * Agencies tend to classify you as looking for 'permanent' or 'temporary' work, rather than dealing with you holistically. Therefore, temping provides greater opportunity for getting your foot over the all important doorstep, as well as keeping you working * Job websites - register with all those relevant to your work, as well as those that are loosely related e.g. IT industry - quite often clients require an information skill and will continue to use their usual recruitment consultant. Online agents search databases for keywords, hence make sure your CV is littered with every variation, e.g. taxonomy/thesaurus/classification etc. * Salary levels - be prepared to drop. You might want to even consider not letting the agency know previous earnings, as it will influence the roles they will put you forward for. Also potential employers won't be interested in you if they think that you might move on when things improve, even though you have a mortgage to pay! * The longer you are out of work, the more your thinking will change. Be careful not to give to agencies the impression of not knowing what you want. It can easily happen! Long before the risk of redundancy you should be thinking about: * the 'what if' factor. If you were laid off tomorrow, what would you do? And what should you do differently now? * If managing a team, ensure that you are also trained on new technologies - you never know when you may need to be able to perform that skill yourself, e.g. html programming. > -
