Compliance in ContextThe FreePint Topic Series: Compliance in Context concludes with Chris Porter’s article Keeping Up To Date with Regulatory Changes. In the light of the ever-growing regulatory burden on business his piece explores some of the options available to ensure that your organisation is keeping abreast of changes. Chris looks at both do-it-yourself routes and some of the commercial services available in the market.

Chris’s article touches on a number of the themes that we have looked at in this FreePint series, including the complexity of the compliance regulation, the need to keep up to date and the risks of being non-compliant. His recommendations have general application across the areas we have looked at – “review both the risk and compliance information monitoring sources and the information dissemination procedures used within your organisation [and to] consider whether any changes are needed…”

Practical & Actionable Information

We started this Compliance in Context Series with the objective of providing practical and actionable information on a range of topics:

  • Product/vendor map: who is doing what in the regulatory space?
  • Keeping up to date with regulation/changes
  • The regulatory environment in key jurisdictions
  • Choosing the right tool for regulatory compliance
  • Defining and measuring value/return on investment in compliance-related products
  • The compliance officer as an internal client – what does their workflow look like and what are their information needs?

From Product Reviews & Mini Reviews to Vendor Q&As

The series comprises 46 articles, including in-depth product reviews of Bureau van Dijk's Compliance Catalyst and Compliance Complete from Thomson Reuters as well as mini reviews of Alacra Compliance Enterprise, Lexis Diligence and an overview of Bridger Insight XG.

There have also been five illuminating Q&A sessions with industry leaders from Thomson Reuters, Perfect Information, LexisNexis, Bureau van Dijk and Alacra.

Introductory Articles and In-Depth Briefings on Specific Topics

Specialist features have included detailed examination of compliance subjects such as the two part article on the definition of Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs) in different jurisdictions (Understanding Politically Exposed Persons & Their Associated Risks by Tom Brown). We also looked at some of the problems encountered in accurate linguistic identity matching (Combat Transcription Errors With Linguistic Identity Matching by Victoria Meyer).

Victoria also introduced some of the key concepts in effective intelligence screening within Anti-Money Laundering programmes (Key Criteria for Effective AML Compliance Screening). Meanwhile Penny Crossland evaluated the best methods for establishing return on investment in Governance, Risk and Compliance tools (Measuring the Intangible - Identifying ROI for GRC Tools).

Taking a wider view of the compliance market, Chris Porter provided a guide to some of the main players, with a particular focus on those supporting "due diligence" research into customers, suppliers and other business partners (Compliance Product Vendor Map: Who Does What in the Regulatory Space). While Neil Marshall discussed the types of compliance tools available to entities allowing them to mitigate risks (A Banking Utility Belt - a Brief Guide to Tools Available to Mitigate Risk).

Matthew Baker and Victoria Brocklehurst examined some of the key issues for compliance teams in meeting regulations across international markets (The Global Regulatory Environment: Key Issues for Compliance Teams).

Product Design Discussion with Vendors

Finally, in the FreePint Webinar Understanding Compliance from the Inside Out, vendors discussed how they engage with customers, remain relevant in a changing regulatory environment and how they create the right balance between standard features and customisation in products designed for workflow integration.

We hope that the FreePint Topic Series: Compliance in Context has provided some useful insights and practical information to compliance practitioners and the information professionals who support them. Some of the articles from the series are included in the FreePint Report: Buyer's Guide on Regulatory Compliance.

FreePint will continue its coverage of the compliance sector, providing awareness of products and tools, best practices and policies to protect your organisation from regulatory risk.
