Abstract

Generative AI is often framed as a productivity breakthrough, promising faster answers and lighter workloads.

But, for many research and information teams, the reality looks quite different. Instead of reducing effort, AI is increasing expectations and reshaping responsibilities.

A new Jinfo report "Six ways AI is reshaping workload, expectations and responsibility for information leaders” is based on interviews with the Jinfo community and other leaders in the information industry.

The report identifies six ways AI is driving this shift:

  • First, adoption and application require continuous experimentation, training and tool configuration as organisations try to embed AI into everyday workflows.

  • Second, augmentation raises the bar for research outputs. Stakeholders increasingly arrive with AI-generated summaries, and expect research teams to provide deeper interpretation, insight and context.

  • Third, verification has become a major task. AI outputs often sound convincing, but may contain inaccurate data or fabricated sources. This means that research professionals must check results carefully.

  • Fourth, validation remains essential. Determining whether information is meaningful, relevant or strategically useful requires human judgement and domain expertise.

  • Fifth, delegation is changing team structures. Routine checks may shift to junior roles or AI-assisted workflows, while senior researchers focus more on advisory work and interpretation.

  • Finally, facilitation is becoming a key responsibility. Research teams increasingly help colleagues learn how to use AI tools effectively and integrate them into organisational processes.

Together, these changes highlight a paradox: AI may automate some tasks, but it also creates new forms of work.

Understanding and managing these shifts will be critical for research leaders as AI becomes part of everyday professional practice.
