Abstract

Last week, Jinfo and the Financial Times co-organised an in-person event, bringing together around 60 information leaders from across the industry.

The subject was “Licensing the future: Premium publishing in the age of AI”. Here is a taste of the session, and some photos.

The afternoon was expertly hosted and co-organised by the Financial Times (FT), at their headquarters in London, UK.

James Mann, Managing Director of FT Professional, headed up the afternoon, with a keynote from the FT's Data Editor, Martin Stabe.

This was followed by two panel discussions exploring the challenges of AI licensing, expertly facilitated by Jinfo's Stephen Phillips:

  1. "Delivering the news with AI – addressing the issues" (Jinfo, FT Professional, LexisNexis, BCLP LLP)

  2. "Licensing news content for AI - navigating the practical complexities” (Jinfo, FT Professional, Evercore, Orrick)

The sessions brought together perspectives from publishers, aggregators, and information management professionals.

The discussions were open and pragmatic, reflecting both the opportunities and the uncertainties, and the overall takeaway from all sides was "we haven't figured it out yet".

There was much note-taking and agreement that this was a valuable and important step towards common understanding.

The dialogue continued online, in this week's Jinfo Community session "Licensed content and AI", and we will soon be reporting in-depth on all of the learnings so far.

After the session, there was a lot more discussion and networking over a lovely canape reception, also generously provided by the Financial Times.

As the event came to a close, the Jinfo team was invited to take in the wonderful sunset views from the top of the FT building.

In the evening, some of the Jinfo team took the opportunity to enjoy some rare in-person time together, having dinner overlooking the River Thames and St. Paul's Cathedral.

Thank you very much to all the panel participants and attendees, and especially to the team at the Financial Times for hosting a very successful and useful event.

We have already received a number of requests for more in-person events. Do let us know if you'd like to host one at your organisation.
