Yet more evidence that simple search and discovery is back on the menu. First it was Business Information Review respondents (http://www.vivavip.com/go/e16627), reinforced by guests at a recent Sue Hill breakfast (http://www.vivavip.com/go/e17539); now a new survey suggests that corporate UK wastes £6.2 billion in time spent searching for information hidden somewhere on its own systems. According to Alistair Handyside, chief executive of open source enterprise search specialist Simplexo (http://www.simplexo.com/), 24% of office workers said they took over a day to find information residing somewhere on their own customer relationship management, email or accounting systems. Only 36% felt confident about finding information in time for an inspection, over a third said they couldn’t find all the information they needed, and more than a quarter had to get help from their IT department. Computer Business Review (http://digbig.com/4ynxa), Information World Review (http://digbig.com/4ynxc) and the Technology Marketing Corporation (http://digbig.com/4ynxb) are among those who have picked up on this story, which seems to provide useful evidence to add to the information professional’s persuasive armoury. They’re certainly useful findings for Simplexo, whose business is simple searching of diverse data repositories across the enterprise – but if you’re thinking of going down the automated enterprise search route, it may be worth considering first a $695 investment in Outsell’s report Information Professionals and Enterprise Search: Getting Started (http://www.vivavip.com/go/e16843).
