The November issue of VIP magazine will contain a review of the news offerings of Dow Jones and LexisNexis, via Factiva.com and Nexis, providing a summary of new functionality and other enhancements added to the two services over the past 12 months. However, 'content is king' and without it, no amount of interface wizardry would help the information professional. The review therefore looks in depth at the sources of both services, with particular focus this year on the financial services sector. In 2009 Factiva.com has continued to expand its foreign language sources, particularly Russian, and has recently added its first Korean sources. With a newly expanded team in India, it has increased licensed content there, the number of Indian sources rising from 58 in 2008 to 351 at present. Other countries where Factiva has made substantial increases are Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Russia, South Korean, Switzerland, Taiwan, the UK, and USA. Nexis shows large increases in sources covering the UK and USA, and remains the leader in US sources. Dow Jones Factiva users now have access to expanded content from WSJ Online and Barron’s Online. There is more content from The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, and an increase in the frequency of Wall Street Journal updates which will occur continuously throughout the day rather than once daily. Since the last review, Nexis has expanded its UK regional content with titles from Kent Messenger, Iliffe Media, and Johnston Press. English language coverage of emerging markets has improved with the addition of content from Euromoney's ISI Intellinews, and Al Bawaba, making it easier for users without in-house language specialists to monitor news in countries across Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle-East and Africa. Quality Web content is available on both services from both Web-based publications and blogs, but it's early days when it comes to social media sources. Both vendors have technology which can be used to monitor social media sites in offerings outside the core news services. However, for specific sources with a wide appeal, the content licensing team is starting to add these to Nexis, and is in the process of bringing on stream Twitter feeds from key US government figures.
