This month’s VIP Magazine includes a review of DataInsight 4.1, a desktop application tool produced by IHS Global Insight, the US-based publisher of economic forecasts. A workflow tool produced “by economist for economists”, DataInsight is an end user friendly product, which information professionals in departments requiring macroeconomic time series and forecasts will find very useful.

In addition to providing 150 economic indicators for more than 200 countries, based on national government statistics and reputable non-governmental sources, IHS has included its own analysis and forecasts in this database. IHS economists use the product to compile their reports, which makes this a unique selling point for DataInsight: it is in the company’s own interest to ensure accuracy and consistency of data.

Economic time series go back to the 1950s for most countries, and forecasts are provided for up to 30 years – a requirement for clients in the power generation industry, for example.

DataInsight has a simple interface, with data categorised by economic, financial, forecast and country statistics. The output options are sophisticated: the graphing option is particularly impressive, since this is fully interactive. It is even possible to include corporate colours and fonts into graphs before making them presentation ready.

The tool is fully integrated into the Microsoft Office Suite, enabling users to update statistics within any Microsoft product. This version of DataInsight also allows users to incorporate proprietary data into tables. In all, a powerful workflow tool, which combines ease of use with comprehensive data and sophisticated functionality.
