I recently reviewed Euromonitor Passport, a market research web-based tool from Euromonitor, for the July issue of VIP Magazine. The company describes itself as a leading provider of global consumer-based market research and the product focuses on statistics and analysis related to consumer-based products. It employs about 800 analysts in 80 countries who are involved in secondary and primary information gathering activities and client support.

The product not only provides various ways to search for data and presents an enormous amount of information, but manages to do it in very creative ways. Users are often able to customise and filter the data in charts to fit their needs. This ability to filter results, view them in various forms and even “customise them on the fly”, by converting result statistics to different units or currencies, is a very useful feature.

Highlights of the product include: an impressive number of data points, ease of editing and filtering searches, fast searching, good download and export capabilities, and consistency in layout of results.

Coverage: The product monitors industry trends and provides strategic analysis, market size and market share information for 26 industry sectors throughout the world. Some of the industries have multiple levels of sub sectors and the number varies by industry. The global aspect of the product is impressive.

Searching and results:  Passport provides a number of different ways to search and to reach the same information. It then provides a variety of filters so that users can narrow or edit their search easily. Search results are mostly easy to read but some tables and charts contain so much data it’s a little overwhelming at first.

Features:  A relatively new and impressive feature is the Dashboard. A Dashboard is an interactive “look” at each industry or for each content sector.  Visually pleasing and robust with data, each Dashboard shows a map of the world and provides key statistics for the industry in question.  By rolling the mouse over the map, the user can see statistics for various parts of the world and can also change the view to focus on a particular country or region. The interactivity and amount of data in these Dashboards provide the user with the ability to view data in multiple different manners, both by geography and item, and in multiple formats.  The interactive Dashboards are a great way of capturing and presenting a large amount of data visually, quickly and in a compact manner.

User support and help: Currently, there is only one training video available on how to search and it contains a lot of information. However, according to the publisher, more videos are “on the way”.  The product displays data in so many different ways that additional training materials would be valuable to new users.
