As anyone working in the financial services industry today can tell you, risk management may turn out to be one of the top corporate concerns of the decade. Many factors have ushered in a seemingly new, riskier business environment: the push for improved regulations to combat fraud and terrorist financing, lingering economic stagnation, and increased presence of emerging markets participants in global commerce are only a few.

As such, companies are increasingly sensitive to risks, including corruption, as the recent Dow Jones State of Anti-Corruption Compliance Survey illustrates. The Dow Jones Survey reported that the proportion of companies with anti-corruption programs has increased in recent years – from 71% in 2009 to 83% today. However, only 38% of surveyed companies had an automated process or program in place.

This month’s VIP takes a look at Dow Jones’s own solution for streamlining anti-corruption risk assessment: the Risk & Compliance Portal. Worldwide in coverage, the Portal provides risk profiles on over 1 million entities in 30 categories, including politically exposed persons (PEPs) from governments, state-owned enterprises, and international organisations.

Risk & Compliance entity profiles are researched and written by Dow Jones using sources in over 60 languages, including Factiva (news database) and a selection of open source internet sites. The Portal permits users to screen names on a scheduled basis, investigate names for risk, create audit trails, and more. Clients can even order Due Diligence reports over the Portal, which are in-depth reports on individual entities.

Dow Jones has also included several complementary features, such as access to their Corruption Currents Blog and Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index.
