Big Data in ActionRecently, FreePint met with Scott Weber, who heads Opera Solutions Government Services (“OSGS”), a subsidiary of Opera Solutions. The company’s scientists and engineers create and provide open source “data exploitation” capabilities to government agencies as well commercial security professionals and analysts. Scott provided some insights into the fascinating world of Opera Solutions and big data in general.

For example, Scott pointed out that customers require new capabilities to turn the growing world of big data into an environment of “small data”, or actionable findings, alerts and recommendations that enable front-line workers to make better decisions, faster.

"If you look at the history of information technology and the explosion of IT in the 1980s, it was all about getting information," Scott commented.  "For a long time, the chant was: ‘We need more information, we need more information, we need more information.’"

"Now the pendulum has swung in the other direction," he continued. "We’re at a point where it is nearly impossible to keep up with the information because data is growing exponentially."
