As the FreePint Topic Series: News, and Beyond launches this month, we ask the co-producers of the series what the upcoming articles, viewpoints and reviews will bring to information managers grappling with news.
FreePint: What's your background?
Chris Porter: I've been involved in almost every aspect of the production and distribution of global business news information, from the era of DOS and command-line searching through multiple generations of Windows and web-based services to present-day cloud-based solutions.
I've worked for companies including Dow Jones, Factiva and Reuters and through my consultancy I now work with some of the world's leading information-intensive companies. Find out more about me and my work with FreePint here.
Shimrit Janes: I've previously worked on a variety of projects, including one that was focused on how social media tools fit into the wider question of current awareness. A key lesson of the project was that current awareness needs to be rooted in the wider questions of why it is important, what is deemed to be "current", and how are people going to be made "aware".
I'm a researcher specialising in the use of social media for knowledge sharing and I work with organisations from legal firms to digital consultancies. Find out more about me and my work with FreePint here.
FreePint: What will the Series bring to readers?
Chris Porter: The FreePint Topic Series: News, and Beyond will bring FreePint's subscribers a highly informed, up-to-the-minute perspective on current best-practice approaches, leveraging FreePint's deep and broad contacts with the information user and vendor communities worldwide.
Shimrit Janes: The advent of social media has had a huge impact on the way in which news is sourced, created, disseminated and found. Organisations and information professionals need to be able to understand this trend, together with its related challenges, and how it impacts on their current awareness programmes. The new FreePint Topic Series will highlight and explore those challenges, giving practical tips on how to navigate a fast-evolving field.
