At FreePint we're always interested in products for legal research and have been following developments in mobile offerings with interest. That's why we asked John DiGilio to work with us on reviewing the app offerings of a number of the best-used mobile legal research products.

He's already reviewed Lexis Advance HD and Fastcase HD and his most recent examination is of the HeinOnline app

With over 15 years of experience with large law firms and legal information vendors and currently national manager of research services for Reed Smith, John has the breadth and depth of knowledge to make him the ideal candidate to put these mobile apps to the test. As he explains, "For traditional vendors of legal research technology, the race is on to capture the attention - and the screens - of today’s mobile attorneys."

John is putting all the legal mobile apps through the same tough testing criteria:

  • Ease of use
  • Content
  • Search functionality
  • Results presentation & delivery
  • Standalone access
  • Continuity between site and app
  • Value and competitive environment.

In his review of the HeinOnline app, John particularly notes "Hein’s vast database covers most sources back to their very beginnings and provides users with clear, searchable, PDF images that can be shared electronically or printed." He adds, "Hein’s development team has found a way to not only replicate [the web-based version] but perhaps even exceed its simple elegance and power."
