Abstract

My Favourite Tipples are shared by Colin Smith. An experienced international business researcher, Colin shares his favourite online resources relating to current affairs and economic topics.

Item

Currently my work revolves around two main topics - finding relevant news content for Africa Alert, and identifying potential markets for the Africa Alert. My "Tipples" choices reflect these points.

  • African Development Bank: A similar resource to the WEF, the ADB offers a comprehensive mixture of news and reports. When the ADB is used in conjunction with WEF & also other international agencies such as the World Bank & International Monetary Fund, researchers have a powerful and comprehensive resource at their disposal.
  • All You Can Read: This site is one of a number providing an international directory listing of broadcasters and publishers. The site is not without its faults, some of the information is old and out of date and there are quite a few broken links. Nonetheless, it is a good starting point for researchers looking information about media sources in unfamiliar areas.
  • Twitter: I use Twitter as an alerting and monitoring tool, highlighting news items that are of potential interest. Twitter "Lists", "Followers" and "Following" offer further insights into other potential sources of information and also offer some guidance as to a particular Twitter account's validity and bias.

For fun:

  • ToffeeWeb This is probably a first for Jinfo and maybe a last! For my sins I am a lifelong fan of Everton Football Club and ToffeeWeb is a fanzine website, dedicated to Everton that provides match reports, discussion boards and commentaries about every aspect of the club.

An article in Jinfo I found particularly interesting:

  • As somebody who began his working career with Finsbury Data Services and the old Textline and then through its development into Factiva, I still like to follow the service and its changes - hence Andrew Grave's article comparing and contrasting Factiva and Nexis was particularly interesting.
