Source Expertise - What It Means in a Google WorldAs the Jinfo Research Focus "Source Expertise - What It Means in a Google World" launches, we ask the co-producers for their views on how the Research Focus will help information professionals to embrace a role that's more strategic than "search" within their organisations.

Tips articles, reviews, webinars and Community sessions on subjects from why database searching is still relevant to special challenges for information researchers in manufacturing will help:

  • Information staff to be seen as source experts
  • Others to see the difference between a Google search and what we do
  • Demonstrate how we control, or at least influence, purchase and management of sources
  • To ensure leaders understand the value of what we do.

Jinfo: What's your background?

Anja Chemnitz Thygesen: I have a background in management consulting where I have been part of the research organisation of two very different consulting companies. In my last position I was managing a research team and continuously looking for the best ways of optimising skills and tasks in our team, training consultants to do research themselves, identifying the relevant end-user tools for them, struggling with knowledge management and finding the best ways of ensuring a good and relevant stream of news throughout the organisation. I have been running my own business for the last four years and now work with many different types of organisations including management consulting companies.

Lynn Strand: I'm a librarian by education, but have spent my career working in organisations providing market and competitive intelligence. By using my research skills and business knowledge, I bring a unique perspective to the information professional's position within a company. I'll be bringing some new and interesting perspectives to this Jinfo Research Focus; blending my traditional academic background with my career focus as a market intelligence practitioner.

Jinfo: What will the Research Focus bring to readers?

Anja Chemnitz Thygesen: This Research Focus will give readers a chance to refresh their view of their own tasks and skills and to look at how they compare to those of other organisations - and hopefully allow them to refine their position a bit. We plan to give a broad palette of inspiration to everyday work in terms of tools and knowledge about sources, methodologies and ways of positioning a research team in the wider context.

Lynn Strand: This Research Focus will bring readers a plethora of new ideas, techniques and viewpoints to consider when beginning a research project. This Focus on new and different sources, using subject matter experts and creating new awareness and opportunities for information professionals should yield powerful insights and concepts to add to our readers' toolboxes.

The Research Focus "Source Expertise - What It Means in a Google World" runs from April-June 2016. Visit the Research Focus page to find out more and keep updated on the latest content, webinars and Community sessions.
