Data analytics - ready your information serviceAs more organisations explore and actually initiate data analytics projects, information professionals need to have a place at the table.

It's not about preserving territory or heading off irrelevance. It's about helping the organisation avoid undue risk around data usage and overspending, whilst applying unique expertise in understanding which data sources are best aligned with a given need.

Yet having a place at the table is one of the key concerns of early respondents on our current Jinfo Survey, covering data analytics. Respondents report:

  • They learn about projects too late in the process for them to have meaningful input into data selection and usage
  • They discover project teams inadvertently using data in ways that are not covered by terms and conditions
  • Their expertise isn't well enough understood for project leaders to think to bring them in sooner.

Nearly 60% of of the 78 respondents to date report that their organisations have some data analytics projects in development or implemented, but without a central strategy to drive them. Nearly two-thirds disagree with the statement, "The expertise of information professionals is appropriately incorporated into data analytics projects."

This state of affairs cannot continue, if organisations are to avoid costly mistakes and missteps as they move into the world of data analytics.

Take 10 minutes to complete the survey. Your responses are anonymous, but if you provide a valid email address at the end, we'll send you a copy of the report upon publication. Use it to build awareness with your stakeholders regarding the value of your expertise to these projects, and to the data analytics strategy overall.

The Jinfo Research Focus "Data analytics - ready your information service" runs from October- December 2016.
