July 2009

Robin Neidorf Early in 2009, we started a programme to help those who were made redundant keep up to date during their job search. Our 'gap subscription' offering makes premium resources VIP and FUMSI available at no charge to professionals seeking their next position.

The gap subscription programme is one way we're working to be more in tune with your immediate needs. Another new initiative is our monthly research surveys, which give you a chance to weigh in on information topics.

Our current survey explores alternative search tools (e.g., what do you use besides Google?). The results will be published in August. Complete the survey anonymously, then provide an email address to receive a free copy of the report.

Past months have seen the publication of:

We learned a lot about what you're interested in during an excellent exhibition at SLA's 2009 Conference. Be sure to request your copy of FreePint's SLA 2009 Special Report, ready for publication later this month - it's chock full of interesting observations from a highly engaging event.

If you have a suggestion for a survey, a report, or any other way we can support your development and career success, please be in touch.

There are three kinds of life policies. Term life which only pays out if you die during the duration of the policy. You might use such a policy along with a mortgage to ensure that if you die during the term of the mortage it is paid off. So the term of the insurance the same as the term of the mortgage. It is not security for the mortgage as such. It only pays out if you die. It has the lowest premiums of the three kinds. I am not aware of any trade in secondhand term policies, as the buyer would only get a pay out if the original buyer died during the term. You would be carrying out what would amount to a bet on the original owners life. For that reason I suspect that assigning a term policy is not allowed.

The second kind is called whole of life. Pay out will always occur with these as it pays out on one's death whenever that is. Costs more than the first kind but less than the third. A reason for taking one out is that the pay out can be exempt from inheritance tax. In that case they are often single premium. a bit like term only the term depends on how long you live. I am not aware of any secondhand market

The third is an endowment or saving policy. They were often sold along with mortgages. They are like term in that they pay out a fixed some if you die during the term. But at the end of the term they "mature" and pay a sum of money. There is a second hand market in these. Ask an independent financial advisor about it.

Thanks for your help and clear guidance on the types of policy.Just need to get the actual policy back from the Assignee so I can check what it is that was sold.
Some Banks take forever to do the paperwork to re-assign policies!

Hi -

In August, FUMSI will be publishing a report on alternative search engines and tools to help researchers get the most value from web-based searching. As part of that project, we invite you to participate in a brief online survey about what kinds of searches you do regularly, which tools you use, and how you manage your knowledge on search engines.

Take the survey: http://digbig.com/5baard

The survey should only take 5 minutes to complete. We'll send a copy of the survey report to anyone who completes the survey and provides a valid email address.

[499063] Mobile phone directory-enquiries service launching

Hi

118800 is launching a mobile phone directory-enquiries service next week.

Personally I do not wish my mobile number to be listed, and have requested it to be removed. If you wish to do likewise, click 'Ex Directory' from the top-right of the homepage at:

http://www.118800.co.uk/

If you wish to be removed, you need to act before the launch next week.

Background information available on the BBC site at:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/8091621.stm

Mobile phone spam (with automated recordings) have been a real problem to me recently, and I don't wish my number to be included in anything that might encourage more of the same.

If you feel similarly, please help to spread the word.

Hope that helps
William

[499572] IT-side information management
http://www.freepint.com/go/b499572

Author:Elius
Date:13/07/2009 01:19 pm
Category:Computers and Software

Hello again all.

I am currently seeking guidance on my next step.

I have covered thoroughly the area of print and/or web publications that deal with information management and records management.

However, I seem to have run into a bit of brick wall in relation to both print and/or web publications that deal with information management and records management from the IT side/perspective.

More specifically, I am seeking:

i) the print and/or web publications from the IT-side that deal with ECM (enterprise content management) / EDRMS (electronic documents records management systems) software, and good solid reviews or commentary on such software;

ii) supplementary to this, I am seeking forums which deal specifically or at great length with ECM and / or EDRMS software.

Any members here able to kindly oblige me on some solid leads in relation to these questions?

Thanks very much.
