Abstract

Jinfo conducted a survey in March-April of 2017, inviting information professionals to comment on how they understand the term discovery services. The research involved open-ended interviews, a survey and follow-up interviews with more than 40 organisations with the largest respondent pool representing pharma and biotech, electronics and engineering, and chemistry and material sciences.

The report covers:

  • The primary functions associated with discovery systems
  • User needs around discovery
  • Cross-disciplinary, specialised content and other variables
  • Integration with other systems
  • Why some organisations are not pursuing discovery systems
  • The most important capabilities of discovery systems
  • Perceptions of web-scale discovery services and broad groupings
  • How discovery technologies address user needs for discovery
  • Deployment of web-scale discovery services
  • Complementary systems and tools such as enterprise content services, link resolvers and data analysis tools.
