Abstract

Altmetric is a data science company and part of Digital Science. It provides tools to enable research organisations, publishers and funders to track the attention of research artefacts such as journals, books, and datasets. It monitors a range of scholarly and non-scholarly sources to provide a broad overview of the attention and engagement individual research outputs are receiving online. The system uses unique identifiers to determine which research output is being discussed.

This review:

  • Introduces the platform's key advantages and who would benefit from using it

  • Looks at Altmetric's value and highlights the wide range of sources used, how it collates them and how each of these sources is weighted using the attention score

  • Explores the platform's technology, particularly its five main features, including content aggregation, visual analytics, search, save and alert functionality and the ability to export data

  • Looks at the outputs and the product administration

  • Identifies competitors, including Impactstory, Kudos and Plum Analytics

  • Outlines future development plans

  • Explains the pricing model

  • Explores the help and training available.

Reviewer Andy Tattersall is an Altmetric ambassador.
