Historically, there was always a divide between those who worked with current, or âreal timeâ data, and those who worked with historical information. Information professionals tended to restrict themselves to the latter, while the IT people looked after the former. Fortunately, the recognition that information managers are capable of managing both is gaining momentum. One of the challenges has been finding tools that explain the market data sector (for that it what we are talking about) in a way that avoids the technical jargon. From my days in investment banking I have always recommended Incisive Mediaâs http://www.incisivemedia.com Inside Market Data Reference, and I am pleased to see that it is still to the fore, with the publication of the 2008 edition. It covers the producers and suppliers of current and historical statistical and analytical information. It has always been a source of information on the global players in the industry and one of its key strengths is its in-depth profiles of specialist data suppliers, including those which cover niche sectors and sources. Examples of the kind of material you can find in the Report include: · Industry statistics, including market share · Profiles of market data providers, including information on the products they offer · Profiles organised by specialism, letting you see comparable products and vendors. The Report is produced in hardcopy (this year an impressive 708 pages) and is available online, which is useful if you need to check something when you are away from your desk. The publication costs GBP1,750/2,625 Euros/US$3,450. Ordering before 21 November gives a 25% discount.About this article
