The annual Next Web Conference (http://2009.thenextweb.com), which was held in Amsterdam last week is a showcase for internet start-ups and new applications, as well a networking event for more than 900 internet professionals. Out of 200 submissions, 24 new ventures are given the opportunity to enter a start-up competition, the winner of which this year was an interesting Dutch venture by the name of ‘My Name is E’ (http://www.mynameise.com). Not dissimilar to an electronic business card, ‘My Name is E’ allows users to share contacts from social networking sites they are registered with via their mobile phones or any wireless USB device. Once usernames are entered on ‘E’, the site allows you to ‘share’ business cards with people of your choice, via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other sites. Industry commentators particularly liked the fact that this tool did away with the need to ‘invite’ people to join their network, it makes hard copy business cards unnecessary and it does not require a native application. (http://digbig.com/4yqbh) Prezi (http://prezi.com), a Hungarian internet start-up displayed its new web application at the show. As the name suggests, the company has developed a web presentation tool, which allows you to create non-linear presentations, with the facility to zoom in and out of a visual map that may contain words, images, videos or links. Tutorial videos on the Prezi site assist first-time users with creating presentations. The basic application is free, but presentations are made public. Two different levels of subscriptions provide users with more storage space and the option to keep their presentations private. Go to http://prezi.com/showcase to see how it works.
