Market research firm Datamonitor has been on the acquisition trail again. Last week, the company announced its purchase of UK packaging research firm Pack-Track (http://digbig.com/5bbnjq), a subscription-based service providing advice and insight to packaging professionals and FMCG brand managers. The acquisition fits neatly into Datamonitor’s consumer and retail vertical sector, boosting its own packaging research business. According to the press release, Pack-Track will continue to operate independently. While parent company Informa had a difficult trading year in 2009 and pulled out of an acquisition of Springer Science & Business Media earlier this year, (see http://www.vivavip.com/go/e28076 for a Livewire posting on the subject), it seems that Datamonitor is going from strength to strength and is pursuing an astute acquisition strategy. Earlier this year, the market research publisher quietly acquired Energyfiles Ltd, a relatively new UK research service that provides historic data and forecasts on oil & gas production and consumption. According to Datamonitor, it is developing its energy and sustainability sector– certainly a growth area, and one which businesses are showing a great interest in. These acquisitions follow last year’s purchase of the Brown-Wilson Group, the US publisher of the Black Book of Outsourcing,(http://digbig.com/5bbnjr), an annual survey of global outsourcing service providers based on client testimonials and feedback. All three purchases provide good synergies and as Datamonitor put it in a press release (http://digbig.com/5bbnjs) , position the group at the “juncture between vendors and buyers”.
