Abstract

Jinfo's "Product review of Springshare's LibGuides" looks at the value of this cloud-based content management platform designed to help information centres curate knowledge and share information.

LibGuides is a Content Management System (CMS) created to help information professionals design and write easy-to-read webpages. Already used by thousands of information centres worldwide, LibGuides helps those who use it to curate knowledge and share information in clean looking online Guides. It's easy to see why it has attracted the likes of research-focused University of Liverpool as a user.

Researcher Sophie Alexander has written an interesting review which points out how versatile and unique LibGuides can be. For a start, it can be used to write and blog about just about any type of coursework, topic or subject. What's more, used by academic, public, and special libraries, LibGuides stands alone in its field with no apparent competition, surprising given how powerful a discovery tool it can be.

Customise your Guides

Reading the "Product review of Springshare's LibGuides" (Subscriber content) will take you through all the ways that you can tailor your Guides to draw in readers.

Sophie comments, "LibGuides can easily be customised. Users can upload their own banners, insert their own HTML and CSS, and strip out the default customisation to make it match their own institutional branding, which is very important for academic institutions and public libraries that have to adhere to marketing guidelines and protocol."

LibGuides is a product from Springshare, and its tools are all hosted in the cloud. That's another bonus since users don't have to download or install any software.

The review explains, "All its tools are what it calls 'mobile first' which means no matter what device the user is on, the content resizes to display properly irrespective of the device being used so no special link for mobile sites needs to be remembered." All sounds good to me.
