Being a freelance web editor, copywriter, proofreader and blog writer means my broad spectrum of work is ever-changing. It's challenging keeping up with the social media world, especially as someone who works from home and is raising a young family. But that has only spurred me on to find the best sources to help make my working life easier, more knowledgeable and generally more interesting...

  • Facebook group The Rules of Engagement: Bristol Social Media & Community Management: I write a lot of copy for small businesses' websites, and larger companies' news sites. Many of these articles need to be shared on social media. So one really useful group is The Rules of Engagement - any questions about the latest comings and goings in the social media field can usually be answered here by a helpful, local person doing the same job. A great way to interact and gain insight!
  • TechSPARK website: A really useful hub of tech innovation. Such a handy site for keeping up to date with the latest events, jobs, news and advice on all things tech. Some great blogs, too.
  • Passle: Passle helps to create engaging and timely content. But that's not what I use it for - as a content creator myself, I love the blogs from the team of expert contributors...a vast selection of varied topics such as "How to create your own GIFs without too much faff". What's not to love about that?
  • LinkedIn: LinkedIn has been a great source of work coming in for me. But I also love that I can hop on and find out what's happening in my working world and read articles that interest me, alongside seeing some good old friendly faces from working days gone by.

For fun:

  • Instagram: It's not an unheard of one (!) but Instagram is my go-to for finding out what's hot and what's not. I'm just starting out with a new interiors blog in my own time, so am making myself aware of what's out there. Strictly speaking, Instagram is for work as well as pleasure - by examining which hashtags are being used for each post in the field I'm currently writing in really helps me when choosing hashtags for the companies I'm working for. Understanding the importance of a hashtag can be a difficult concept for those of us who have not grown up alongside social media - but the fact I have managed to get my almost 70-year-old father on board for his music means everyone is starting to realise social media is a must for businesses!

An article in Jinfo which I found particularly interesting:

  • I enjoyed the Jinfo article, "Technology drivers in current awareness", about the increasing role that technology is playing in providing timely and effective current awareness. I enjoyed the references to the research findings, and the responses about how technology platforms help save us time and increase our work productivity.
