How you spend your time demonstrates what you value, even more than how you spend your money. You can always make more money; time, once spent, is gone.

FreePint ResearchI hope you'll consider 5 to 10 minutes of your time a worthy investment in these FreePint Research projects:

  • Survey on Enterprise Market for Mobile Content: This is the second phase of a two-part project, involving a very brief survey on what mobile devices you currently use and what you'd like to have available. So far respondents seem to carry between 2 and 3 devices regularly, and the content they'd most like to have access to includes industry news and social networks.

  • Survey on News Needs and Preferences: Our third annual survey on news needs and preferences is closing up data collection shortly, but there's still time to share your perspective on budget pressures, desired features and other trends.

There's a clear ROI for your investment of time: All participants get a free copy of the resulting report(s), providing you with practical benchmarking, new ideas and early warning of emerging trends that may have an impact on your work in 2011 and beyond.

Time Studies

Across the FreePint Family, we invest our time in creating products and resources designed to save your time. Take VIP Reports on Products, for example: Every month, we research products, line up access for reviews, work with researchers on the review protocol, edit and fact-check every report, and format the results in a package that's easy for customers to use and distribute. Each report represents a time-investment of more than 80 hours.

And VIP publishes two of those each month, available for only £39 for single-site use. (Learn more and purchase them in the FreePint Shop, or subscribe to VIP for greater savings.)

ResourceShelf is another great example: Our contributing editors post high-quality resources to the freely available ResourceBlog night and day - an average of more than 300 per month. Taken together, our editors easily invest more than 100 hours every month to pull together these resources.

And the results are free to you -- simply visit the ResourceBlog online to get immediate value, and subscribe to the free ResourceShelf Newsletter for weekly updates.

I could pick so many other examples, from FUMSI Articles and FUMSI Reports to the hundreds of monthly DocuBase citations. But the results are consistent: FreePint invests our time and resources to help you save your time for tasks of higher immediate value to you and your employer.

What's it's worth to you? Share your FreePint testimonial, and help us spread the word.

By Stephanie Hoffman

Teaching, motivating, parenting... all are part of daily life and work. Here are just a few of my picks for making them a bit easier and more fun:

  • Voicethread.com is a fantastic web based tool for distance learning. Voicethreads are collaborative slideshows that use documents, images, videos or anything you can think of and allow others to comment using voice, text or audio files.

  • Blabberize.com is a fun way to drop an entertaining clip into any email message. Students always enjoy receiving one; it takes about a minute to create and makes assigning that 5 page essay just a little bit more fun.

  • Theweekinrap.com by flocabulary is a hilarious and engaging way to bring current, world events into your virtual classroom. A new one is created each Friday.

  • Woot.com is the very best deal a day site on the web, it check it every day first thing.

  • Bigbrainz.com has an incredible free game called Timez Attack that is the ultimate multiplication tool for kids. Created by Nintendo video game designers, this free resource will have your kids playing multiplication games for hours on end and charting mastery progression as they go.

Stephanie Hoffman is a National Special Education Manager for Connections Academy, a leading tuition-free, fully accredited public school for students in grades K-12; currently enrolling over 10,000 students throughout the United States. Stephanie has been a teaching special education students since 1994, lives in Minnesota, telecommutes to Maryland and enjoys apple picking and geocaching with her husband and children.

For Digital Asset Management, Search is Not Enough

Fran AlexanderBy Fran Alexander
FUMSI: Manage

Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems bring the promise of increasingly sophisticated search techniques but all that glisters may not be gold. Fran Alexander examines the pros and cons of tagging, content-based image retrieval, face recognition, digital fingerprinting and screen-to-text, and concludes that they are very exciting but may be in the category of 'nice to have' rather than business critical.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems often include the latest search technologies such as tagging, content-based image retrieval, face recognition, digital fingerprinting and speech-to-text but beware of the hype and consider the pros and cons. A DAM system that supports your business critical, rather than your 'nice to have', functions is likely to be more cost effective overall.'

Creating Information Communities with Twitter: Notes for Publishers and Content Providers

By Scott Brown, Christy Confetti Higgins and Cindy Hill
FUMSI: Share

Developing communities of users is a long-established way of generating feedback but it was not until the advent of Twitter that these communities could bear such beneficial fruit. The results of research by the Social Information Group show how publishers and information professionals alike can gain from having an active presence on Twitter.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Publishers are using social media technologies to provide expanded connections to their audiences. Whether they have a formal social media strategy or not, Twitter can be a useful addition to conventional marketing efforts. It provides a transparent and conversational connection to the communities publishers need to reach, namely buyers, users, information professionals, subject matter experts, current and future authors, students, faculty and more.'

VIP issue 83News products - A VIP Editorial

One of the most satisfying experiences in publishing VIP is when we can fulfill a specific request from a subscriber for a product review. Such is this case with this month's review of ICAP Online Services, a provider of data about Greek companies. A subscriber made a point of coming to the FreePint tabletop at June's SLA Annual Conference to ask about providers of Greek information, and lo, a few months later you have the result.

This month's second review is of NewsEdge.com, published by Acquire Media. As with last month's featured Eureka.cc, NewsEdge.com is part of a growing category of business news products. Each of these products differentiates itself based on its particular dataset, search and delivery functions, industry customisation, workflow integration and host of additional factors. They compete successfully both with the lower end of the market (as in, the free sources of news content) as well as the higher end of the market - the Big Names in news aggregation we're all familiar with.

The news category is one that never fails to give us plenty to write about: Between paywalls going up and coming down, debates over licensing and links, and new frontiers in mobile delivery, there's always news about news. That's part of why we've dubbed next month 'November News Month'. Here's a short list of what you can look forward to:

  • In-depth review of Factiva, plus comparative analysis of sources and features across a number of news providers, including LexisNexis, NewsEdge.com, Eureka.cc, and Moreover's Newsdesk

  • Results of FreePint Research: News Needs and Preferences (haven't completed the survey yet? There's still time to add your thoughts...)

  • 2010 News Report, collecting LiveWire coverage about the news category over the past 12 months

We'll also be hosting online discussion, via webinar for live interaction, about the role of news products in your content portfolios. We know from current and past research projects that news content is an area many VIP subscribers struggle with: Enormous internal pressures demand you cut the budget for news down to the bone, without losing coverage or flexibility. Users want news in different formats (including, increasingly, mobile formats). These webinars will present some FreePint Research data then facilitate peer-to-peer, confidential discussion on how you are resolving these opposing tensions.

Participation in these webinars will be free to VIP subscribers. You'll receive an invitation to register for the limited spaces available, and please email me directly with any questions you may have or to let me know of your specific interests - I'm always eager to hear from you at robin.neidorf@freepint.com.

In the meantime, there's plenty to keep you informed in this month's VIP - SourceWire, results from FreePint Research: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content, Tap the Wire and more.

Enjoy.
