There's still time to participate in the FreePint Research Survey: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content. Unless you have no mobile devices (and yes, I know there are a few Luddites out there), your input on this very brief survey will help us create a useful benchmark for growth of small-screen information resources in the future. You'll get a free copy of the full report upon publication.

FreePint ResearchWhy focus on mobile devices? Simply put, mobile computing is one of the most dynamic areas of the information world today. Twice in the past two months, as I prepared presentations for different industry groups, I had to remind myself that the launch of Apple's iPad was only 10 months ago -- already it feels like it should be longer ago than that!

Most of the trade commentary, however, looks at adoption in the consumer space. In the enterprise arena, a number of key factors, such as security, infrastructure investment and licensing questions, have prevented market demand from growing as quickly. The first phase of FreePint Research: Enterprise Market for Mobile Content surfaced many of these barriers. If your company would benefit from an insider's look at those barriers, consider booking a custom webinar briefing on the results.

I have no doubt that FreePint Research will continue to look at mobile content and the mobile market in 2011. Some of the other projects we're starting to develop include:

  • Relationship between the information centre and end users: Many organisations continue to rely on an information centre, but the relationship of the staff in that centre and end users througout the organisation has changed a great deal, particularly in the wake of the recession. We'll examine these changes and identify emerging trends for new working styles.

  • Knowledge management and intranets: We're hearing more reports that SharePoint and other intranet systems are finally achieving greater gains in supporting knowledge management. We want to know more -- how, why, where and at what cost?

I also expect we'll revisit some of the evergreen topics of the past: copyright, buying patterns, staff and budget adjustments and more.

Get Involved
Get involved with FreePint Research by registering your interest in participating in surveys. You'll receive a personal invitation to participate in every new survey. Or join the growing list of companies like Dow Jones, Financial Times, Elsevier, Copyright Clearance Center, Dialog, Bureau van Dijk, LexisNexis and more when you sponsor research projects. Sponsors get input into research design, early insight on the results, and messaging in the final report, among other benefits.

Research also provides the entire FreePint Editorial Team with ideas and direction for editorial development. Help us get there faster: Share your opinion on topics we should cover in FUMSI, VIP and other resources, in 2011 and beyond.

Sustainability, biodiversity and organic gardening are topics that interest me and that are becoming more popular, as we gradually realize the devastation we're wreaking on our fragile planet. A few of the websites I check on a regular basis are:

  • Resurgence: This is the companion site to the magazine of the same name. Although I have a subscription to the magazine, the website contains web exclusive articles and reviews, for example, 'Your Countryside Needs You', 'New Heights for Online Campaigning', 'Tapestry Weaving' and 'Biodiversity and Wellbeing'. It's an eclectic mix of content covering earth, art and spirit.

  • The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: The Red List is published annually and lists endangered species. According to The Red List, biodiversity is being lost at 1000 times the natural rate. Of 52017 species assessed so far, 17936 are threatened with extinction - that's a whopping 34%. The website contains interesting articles, a 'Species of the Day' and for librarians, knowledge managers and those involved in taxonomy, check out the Red List's taxonomy for classifying each species. It's very comprehensive.

  • Soil Association: If you're into organic gardening, it's worth taking a look at the Soil Association's website. It has lots of articles, plus monthly tips for growing your own organic food as well as information on visiting organic farms, and how to get actively involved in their campaigns to support planet-friendly food and farming.

  • Garden Organic: This is the UK's national charity for organic growing. You'll find great FAQ and organic gardening advice sections.

  • Happy Planet Index: Are we happy? This is an innovative index from the New Economics Foundation. The Happy Planet Index, 'combines environmental impact with human well-being to measure the environmental efficiency with which, country by country, people live long and happy lives'. You can access an interactive map and also download the rankings in Excel. The UK ranks 74th, while Costa Rica ranks 1st! Time to ask ourselves some searching questions, methinks!

Helen Clegg is Director of Knowledge Management in A.T. Kearney's Procurement & Analytic Solutions unit and has been working in the field of international business research and knowledge management since 1988. She will be speaking at KM World 2010 in Washington and at the Online Information Conference in London about using collaborative tools, including social media, to move from knowledge management to knowledge enablement. In her spare time, Helen is transforming her back garden into an organic vegetable plot.

  • [RS] Resource of the Week: News

One of the fascinating developments that the Internet has brought about is an interpenetration of media, so that 'newspaper' websites are now commonly a blend of text, pictures, audio and video. And, as part of the effort to maintain their relevance, they commonly provide regular updates to stories or add fresh ones, so that a web-based newspaper comes to resemble a rolling TV news channel. In the UK, the Guardian demonstrates some of the best examples of these features, with good coverage of domestic and international stories. As with many other newspapers now, journalists also blog on the site, providing extra information and commentary that does not feature in the actual paper. Unlike the Times (still largely out on its own in this respect), its content is not hidden behind a paywall.

This is not all - the site also provides a valuable World News Guide that gives links to major newspapers and governmental outlets in all regions of the world, in turn broken down by country.

  • [FreePint] Research: News Needs and Preferences

Our annual survey on News Needs and Preferences will be closing in a week. Your input is particularly important to us, as we use these results to plan editorial content for 2011 and beyond.

If you have not yet participated, please take 10 minutes to complete the survey now. (If you have already completed the survey, THANK YOU!)

Some highlights of results to date:

The ability to monitor use of resources seems to be slightly more important to respondents this year than in previous years - a function of tighter budgets and need for closer controls, perhaps?

One-third of respondents indicate that they have at least one news product integrated into their intranet; another 16% report that they do not integrate a news product, but they know there is internal demand to do so

The trend towards increasing use of free resources continues, with 65% of respondents indicating that they have increased use of free news sources, and 57% indicating that they expect to increase their use of free in the next 12 months.

The full report will be published in November 2010, and the results will affect the products we select for review, the features we cover in a product review and research topics for the coming year.

Curated information: what it means for researchers

Sue EipertBy Sue Eipert
FUMSI: Find

Curation is moving away from the original dictionary definition of 'to manage a museum or collection' into the digital world which is good news for researchers. As the examples in Sue Eipert's article show, the compiled and annotated data in the curated databases are a great way of locating both original sources and ontologies for subject areas.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Modern professional curation involves digital as well as physical objects. The Digital Curation Centre describes digital curation as 'maintaining, preserving and adding value to digital research data throughout its lifecycle'. Data curation is not unlike traditional curation in that it includes selection of data, database and user interface design, the construction of ontologies, determination of access policy, preservation issues etc. For the researcher, curated databases are a great source - not only for the information, but also for finding the original sources used and learning about the ontologies for that subject area. The Wireless Interactive Lecture Demonstrator project (WILD Thing for short)

Darren MundyBy Darren Mundy
FUMSI: Use

Getting students engaged and involved in the learning process is a challenge for any lecturer so the WILD Thing provides an interesting solution. It allows lecturers to embed dynamic content directly into a PowerPoint slide, and students to use mobile devices to comment or ask questions during the lecture. Despite the risk of students sending abusive comments, this system has great potential.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'The aim of the WILD Thing project was to enable students in the lecture room environment to interact through mobile devices with a lecturer's slide content. A web-based system was developed which, through a Microsoft plug-in in PowerPoint, enables lecturers to insert dynamic content directly into a slide so there is no need in the lecture room environment to switch between delivered slides and a web browser. The students seem positive about the potential for the system's use in a classroom environment.'

Business-orientated social networking service LinkedIn is acquiring ChoiceVendor, which provides ratings and reviews of business-to-business service providers across the United States. Meanwhile its rival ZoomInfo has announced a new platform to power a suite of applications designed for business people in sales, marketing, business development and recruiting.

Businesses that have been hesitant hitherto about encouraging their staff to exploit the opportunities such sites can offer may have to rethink their approach in light of developments such as these. These sites may have been 'nice to have' up to now, but are gearing up to become 'must haves' for the business community.

Company staff in the United Arab Emirates face the greatest restrictions on using social networking sites, according to an international survey carried out by the specialised staffing firm Robert Half International. Yet they are also some of the most active in their use of social and professional networking platforms.

Although the UAE is an extreme case, it nevertheless emphasises the gap between what companies think they're doing vis-a-vis social networking, and what's probably happening under their noses. Every company needs a social media policy; for a terrific example check out the Salesforce.com policy video, which is clear, common sense and concise.

Customer relationship management needs to move from the 'Amazon' model, supporting transactions, to the 'Facebook' model, engaging with customers where they are congregating, says Marc Benioff of CRM specialist Salesforce.com. But another commentator warns that consumers are becoming more savvy about the 'fake transparency' such customer engagement strategies frequently try to offer.

Regulators, too, are focusing their gaze on marketers' social networking activity. From next March, the United Kingdom Advertising Standards Authority will extend its remit to advertisers' marketing communications on their own websites, as well as those in other non-paid-for space under their control such as social networking sites.

Offshoring of knowledge services actually slowed during the recession as firms switched instead to survival mode, according to a report from the knowledge process outsourcing specialist Evalueserve. But outsourcing is now back on the agenda, with an increasing emphasis on its transformational as opposed to merely cost-saving potential.

A report from Gartner considers how the Cloud will affect outsourcing developments in IT, while a Forbes Insight survey looks at the growing importance of business process outsourcing. However the Economist Intelligence Unit warns that assessing the business imperatives of outsourcing activity while maintaining company loyalty will be 'an incredible balancing act'.
http://www.vivavip.com/go/e30649

With greater transparency requirements in the public sector and tougher compliance obligations in the private, the need for effective corporate record keeping remains paramount. A new report from Outsell looks specifically at the growing importance of digital repositories and the raft of purposes to which they can be put.

But who should manage them? Information professionals who exploit data and intelligence from all sources for the benefit of their organisation are increasingly in competition with archivists and records specialists to oversee a process that is spreading rapidly from academic and government libraries to take hold in corporate settings as well.
