Editorial

Robin NeidorfThe most recent Subscription Update focuses in large part on our current Topic Series, "All About Usage: From Content Sharing to Data Mining".

This is a broad and exciting Topic Series that examines how information usage today looks dramatically different to the way it did 10 years ago... and why it will look different again in the near future.

As part of this Topic Series, we're pursuing three streams of research:

  1. Survey on Authentication: Recently-closed survey, with results to be published shortly, on how corporate entities are tackling the challenges of seamless access

  2. Survey on Use of Web Content: Soon-to-open survey on how corporate entities cope with a form of usage that is prevalent yet rarely managed: web content

  3. Case Studies on Text and Data Mining: Structured interviews with information managers at a range of corporate entities, to better understand and document the ways text and data mining projects are staffed, run, and measured.

The expertise of information professionals is essential in helping organisations of all kinds minimise risks and maximise opportunities relating to information.

But that expertise needs to cover more ground than ever - not just the complex world of sources and licensing, but also the technologies that support delivery while maintaining security, and furthermore the user interactions with that content that lead to value.

"I don't have time" is the most common comment we hear from information professionals. And it's true that nearly every one of us is doing more with less, serving more needs with fewer resources. But for your expertise to be strategic and central to your organisation, you have to explore these broader areas.

We try to help: every FreePint article is designed to be read in fewer than 5 minutes and immediately enable you to do something differently or more effectively. Scan the items in this newsletter and pick 3 to read today, or star them to read tomorrow. 15 minutes, twice a month.

The success and strategy of information in your organisation demand no less.
