Robin NeidorfAre we witnessing the end of an era for premium news databases?

Product managers, designers and engineers are as clever and creative as they've ever been. Features that offer visualisation, interactive outputs, and workflow integrations continue to impress our researchers when they conduct product reviews.

But are all these developments responding to a market that simply doesn't exist in the size or strength of three years ago?

This is the question I'm asking this week during teleconference Communities of Practice sessions with FreePint Subscription customers. I'm presenting our observations:

  • More organisations are making do with less or doing entirely without... and they're not regretting those decisions

  • A growing number of content buyers are opting for resources that incorporate news with other types of content instead of standalone news products, with middling degrees of success

  • Yet other organisations are taking a DIY approach, focusing on those resources that are most relevant to their needs and looking beyond traditional "news" to find them

...and then we'll talk about participants' needs. I'm deeply curious to know how they respond to these observations and answer questions about the unique and compelling role that premium news products play (or not) in their portfolios today.

FreePint has long opined that news is a "bellwether" category: trends that take hold in news often develop in other categories like company, industry and people information. That's one reason this year's Topic Series is "News, and Other Commodities". Across all these categories, the value is increasingly not defined by the content itself but by its packaging, or how it can be combined, manipulated or used.

Have your own opinion about premium news databases and the viability of their future? Drop me a note and let me know - robin.neidorf@freepint.com, or submit anonymously via our contact form.
