September’s issue of VIP Magazine features a product review of Preqin’s Private Equity databases, which are a series of modules that provide intelligence on buyouts, venture capital, mezzanine, distressed debt, fund of funds, secondaries and other fund types. Preqin collects information through regular interviews with fund managers and general partners, access to information requests, and ongoing monitoring of public sources. The information is provided to end clients through their menu-driven, online platform, which is easy to use and offers good data and chart export capabilities.

Preqin’s databases include fund, firm, company and deal profiles, as well as performance data on funds worldwide. Their detailed profiles cover all private equity stakeholders, including fund managers, investors, companies, placement agents, legal firms and consultants, and include proprietary intelligence gathered from Preqin’s direct interviews with industry participants. For example, their investor profiles provide information on future investment plans, which are gathered by Preqin’s research and interview analysts, through direct communication with investors. Preqin’s performance data are similarly impressive; with data on over 5,600 funds, Preqin holds performance metrics on what they estimate is 70% of capital ever raised, worldwide. Preqin provides the usual PE metrics, including IRR, DPI, and RPVI, and has user-friendly tools for creating custom benchmarks.

I’ve used several competing private equity data products and Preqin provides some of the most robust search functionality and detailed coverage that I have seen.

The company is headquartered in London, and has a sizeable client base of about 1,750 individual firms from 60 countries. VIP’s report also indicates some of Preqin’s future developments, such as improved alert capabilities and expanded coverage of venture capitals in 2012.
