 Editorial

By Robin Neidorf

Robin NeidorfNovember is 'News Month' at FreePint - the month in which VIP publishes its comprehensive comparative review of news offerings from the major aggregators, along with the results of our survey of users' needs and preferences with regard to news. As I write this, we're nearing the end of what is always a substantial project. Hundreds of hours have gone into research, writing, fact-checking, analysis and, now, production.

As challenging as it is to undertake a project of this scope, VIP subscribers look forward to it every year - some have even told us that the single report is worth the price of their annual subscription because of the time it saves them and insight it offers. (If you're not yet a subscriber, you can preorder at a discount.)

News needs This year's survey covered more than the products under review: We also solicited input on how information professionals address broader needs for news within their organisations, including free resources, digital versions of print products and other elements in the news revolution currently taking place around us. (You'll see plenty of comment on this revolution on the VIP LiveWire - see extracts in this issue of FreePint and visit the LiveWire for more.)

One interesting trend cropped up in the comments many survey respondents added to their quantitative feedback: They are building their own feeds from the many free or low-cost tools now available. They are defining what 'news' is relevant to their organisations, and then they are building the mechanisms to deliver it.

I expect we'll see more of this 'grow your own' approach. FUMSI contributors Scott Brown and Nicole Engard can jump-start your learning, with their step-by-step guides on how to use Yahoo! Pipes to create relevant, customised information resources, and library mashups. If a page has an RSS feed, it can be Piped. Try their tips and share your creation on the FreePint Bar, where you'll find plenty of like-minded professionals to comment.

Another important finding from the news survey that resonates with what we've heard elsewhere (e.g., in the VIP Report: Economic Impact Research) is the increasing importance of free resources, even as information professionals make the case for paid products. I'll be speaking about this trend at Online Information in an information masterclass titled Content Portfolios: Merging 'Free' and 'Fee'. If you'll be at the show on Wednesday 2nd December, come to Theatre C at 13:15 to hear it, and then stop by the FreePint stand no. 122 to say hello.

In other Online Information-related news, we're delighted to sponsor the AIIP's Presidents' Breakfast.. If you are contemplating a move into self-employment, or if you've made the leap, the Association of Independent Information Professionals is the best support organisation out there; and the breakfast (Tuesday 1st December) is an excellent opportunity to meet the leadership and network with a great group of people.

There's lots happening at Online Information this year, so complete our RSVP form to get the latest updates, whether you're able to attend or not. We're looking forward to seeing so many of our friends and partners soon.

 My Favourite Tipples

Jennifer Smith

By Jennifer Smith

Over the years I've moved from reading a collection of favourite sites, to using sources which feed me the news in which I'm likely to be interested. These news-aggregation 'services' are mostly produced by people who are interested in the same things I am, rather than a commercial aggregation service. They point me to stories from a far wider range of sources than I would ever have found by myself.

  • Twitter -- for the past few months my main source of news has been via people I follow on Twitter. My Twitter feed, via Tweetie, runs constantly at the side of my computer screen. The benefit of Twitter comes from following a wide range of people, but there are some people who are certainly worth following for a stream of interesting news and comment on the information world.

  • Hacker news -- this appeals to me for two reasons. Firstly, it's an up-to-the-minute feed of current IT developments by IT professionals. It's the issues that may appear in the mainstream news later down the line, but this is where they first get aired. Secondly, from an information professionals perspective it is a fascinating example of user-generated filtering and ranking of information.

  • Outlaw -- maintained for several years by UK law firm, Pinsent Masons, this is a reliable source of news stories on, mainly UK and EU, IT and IP law.

  • LinkedIn -- just in the last few months we seem to have reached the critical mass of information professionals on Linkedin needed for it to become a really useful source of news and views on the information world. The groups and group discussions are particularly useful, and pretty much every group in the information world, certainly in the UK, seems to now have a LinkedIn group.

  • Snowmail -- for general news I love this once-a-day email from the UK Channel 4 News team with the most important news stories, and commentary from the presenters on why they've chosen which stories to cover.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Many library sites like to include local news on their homepage; wouldn't it be great if you could grab this data dynamically from several different sources so that your homepage is always up to date? Using the simplest form of pipe you can do this.'

VIP issue 71Getting value from managing your documents effectively (and what can happen if you don't) in VIP Magazine No. 71

Growing pressure from regulators, government and the public means that enterprises increasingly need to put in place appropriate systems for managing their documents. As part of a public utility, Scottish Water's Capital Investment Delivery (CID) section is no exception, with a requirement not only to manage the storage of essential documents but also to execute key business processes based upon them.

Opting for the CITADON electronic document management system, Gillian Paterson explains how its implementation not only enabled the sharing of mandatory documentation and key project information between CID staff, but also facilitated further value-add activities. Now staff can also share information about best practice in mandatory document submission, and the system also streamlines external partners' applications for payment.

On VIP LiveWire recently...

  • The tensions between free and fee have generated a number of comments on the LiveWire, following Penny Crossland's writeup of a recent SLA Europe event: a panel discussion featuring representatives of all perspectives on the continuum. Penny reports on lively debate, including opinions of Laurence Rafsky of Acquire Media, Jeremy Lawson of Dow Jones, digital media law expert Laurence Kaye, and Andrew Hughes of the Newspaper Licensing Agency.

  • Following her post, several members of the audience shared links to their blog postings (see http://digbig.com/5baqmy and http://digbig.com/5baqna).

  • Indicating their commitment to the topic, Andrew Hughes weighed in on the LiveWire with a few clarifications (http://digbig.com/5baqnb) on datapoints, and Jeremy Lawson added additional insights (http://digbig.com/5baqnc) on what might make a successful or unsuccessful transition to a paid online subscription service.

  • This discussion, along with dozens of additional items relating to free and fee news, news coverage and availability, and resources to help professional researchers access news, will be included in the forthcoming VIP Report: News Needs and Preferences, to be published in November 2009. Our just-published article, Frequently Requested Statistics on Immigrants and Immigration in the United States, covers everything from Mexican immigrants to health-care coverage to government budgets and backlogs. A few interesting numbers: Of the 46.9 million people in 2008 who identified themselves as having Hispanic or Latino ancestry, nearly two-thirds (62.0 percent) were native-born US citizens.
