 Editorial

By Robin Neidorf

Robin Neidorf

When I was a child I occasionally went to work with my father. He'd set me up at a table with some pencils, scrap paper and used computer punch cards to play with. The punch cards kept me occupied for several hours -- I'd trace the holes onto the scrap paper and then connect the dots randomly to see what kind of creature might emerge from the shape.

Computing powerThat room did not so much house the computing power of the company (an industrial supply business) as it WAS the computer power itself. It was hot -- those behemoths of the 1970s generated a lot of heat while they computed. It was also noisy. The machines were big and relied on manual bits (the punch cards, the magnetic tape reels) to complete their unimaginable computations.

Today, my own daughter's iPod Touch can probably do more in half a minute than everything in that hot, crowded room could have done in a week.

The tools of information shrink every year, even as they grow in power. Two of the most recent FUMSI articles explore different elements of this phenomenon: First, Patrice Curtis offers a look at useful iPhone apps for researchers -- heavy-duty tools you can download for pennies and carry around in your pocket. Although her article focuses on apps available for Apple devices, I certainly expect to see more options for non-Apple devices, particularly as Google muscles into the game.

Next, take a look at Martin Belam's overview of URL shortening services. These services have been around for a long time, but the explosion of microblogging tools (primarily Twitter) have made them must-have resources. I invite you to take a look at DigBig, the shortening service offered by FreePint's sister company, Willco Ltd. DigBig is a free service and enables you to track usage of your shortened links. DigBig is also vigilant against spam usage, as spam can create service disruptions and difficulties for legitimate users.

As tools and technologies get smaller, they also get more flexible. Smaller tools can be combined to create customised solutions. Embed a widget on your browser homepage or subscribe to an RSS feed in your email client, and you've created something that works better for however you prefer to work. We've even recently added a vastly improved RSS feed for the FreePint Newsletter -- something subscribers have requested many times in the past. Add http://web.freepint.com/go/newsletter/feed/ to your favourite reader to support your preferred information flow and working style.

'Cheaper, smaller, faster' is the common refrain throughout the history of technology, and information technology sings the same tune. No doubt my daughter will someday use a business information tool that puts today's pocket devices to shame. It's hard to even imagine the power we'll carry in a device that's perhaps the size of a fingernail.

What will remain the same, regardless of the size or speed of the devices and software, is the need for information professionals who can maximise their value, stay informed about the latest changes, and prevent information abundance from tipping over into information overload. FreePint Family resources help you deliver. Tell us what you need to stay ahead of change:

 My Favourite Tipples

Sara Batts

Submit your list of up to five favourite tipples to support@freepint.com for publication with your byline and photo in the FreePint Newsletter. Have a single tip to share? Post it to the FUMSI Forum.

By Sara Batts

  • Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations
Invaluable for deciphering unfamiliar abbreviations for case reports and journals. It's one of the first websites I ensure new trainees know about.

  • Search Europa
Finding EU materials can be tricky; this is a good first port of call for a quick search before tackling the more complicated official structures.

  • Beer in the Evening
A great pub guide for those who want to know where decent real ale is available, and where to find pubs either with or without sport showing depending on the day.

  • Dropbox
I was introduced to this service earlier this year and it instantly made life so much simpler. It allows me to work on and synchronise documents from many locations - great when I want to do ten minutes' PhD work at lunch or on my commute but not have multiple versions of the same spreadsheet.

  • Delicious
As a team we use this for those kind of useful links you might refer to once in a blue moon, and at home I use this to organise PhD materials.

Sara Batts is Senior Research Librarian in the London office of law firm Reed Smith where her responsibilities include organising training as well as solving legal and business research enquiries. She is currently president-elect of SLA Europe having joined the Chapter's board in 2009 as blog editor. Sara loosely maintains a blog about professional life at bit.ly/UnData and tracks the varying progress of her part-time research degree at bit.ly/Batts. Sara is a real ale fan and a runner blessed with more enthusiasm than speed. She is on Twitter at @Batty_Towers.

Real-time flight tracking on the Internet is old news. And many of us are also familiar with various options for keeping track of trains or buses. But what about tracking ships at sea? OK, in all likelihood, this is not something most of us need to do on a regular basis. But Gary passed along a link to MarineTraffic.com last week, and I've been playing with it on and off since then. When you first arrive at the site, what you see is a world map - the Live Ships Map - dotted with lots of translucent gray box, each with a number inside. Click on one of the boxes, in a part of the world that's interesting to you, and you're quickly zoomed in to that part of the map. And you see, in the water, an array of different colored markers representing different types of ships.

  • [FreePint] Knowledge Keeps the Hive Humming
Bees in a hive are model knowledge managers. Worker specialisation is critical to a functioning hive. Equally essential is the ability of individual bees to share what they know selectively: Where is the food? What is the danger? The perfectly collaborative hive is something organisations rarely achieve. In an ideal knowledge management (KM) environment, specialised workers have access to precisely the information they need, when they need it.

iPhone Apps for Researchers

Patrice CurtisBy Patrice Curtis
FUMSI: Manage

With over 244,000 apps available for Apple's iPhone and iTouch, are there any which can help business researchers? Patrice Curtis examines a range of apps for finding news, reputation monitoring, productivity and reference, and answers three simple questions for each: is it easy to use; can a researcher use it to share findings with colleagues; and will it allow a researcher to help an internal/external client achieve their goal(s)?

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'This report is designed to focus on those applications - or apps as they are commonly called - that will help and/or support business researchers (Finding News, Reputation Monitoring, Productivity and Reference). I judged each app against three simple questions: Is it easy to use? Can a researcher use it to share what she finds on, say, competitive intelligence, with colleagues? Will it allow a researcher to help an internal/external client achieve their goal(s)?'

A short look at URL Shorteners

Martin BelamBy Martin Belam
FUMSI: Share

Although URL shortening services first started in 2002 with the introduction of tinyurl.com, it is the increasing use of the social media, particularly those with restricted message lengths, that has led to an explosion in their use. Martin Belam looks at how these services work and explores the advantages and disadvantages of using them.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'The growth of social media content sharing on the web has seen an explosion in the use of URL shortening services, the premise of which is that they replace having to use a long URL like http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/insideguardian/2010/jan/25/news-linked-data-summit with a much shorter one like http://bit.ly/8v6FFs. When the bit.ly servers see the code '8v6FFs', they know to redirect the user to the original article. Popular services include http://bit.ly, http://tr.im, http://is.gd/ and http://j.mp/. Google are also in on the act, with their own http://goo.gl/ and http://youtu.be domains.'

VIP issue 81News Resources - A VIP Editorial

By Robin Neidorf

Robin Neidorf is the General Manager of FreePint and serves as lead researcher for FreePint Research projects, including the now-running survey on News Content: Needs and Preferences. Complete the anonymous survey now at http://digbig.com/5bcffc

Business is driven by news. Every day, leaders review what's happening in their industry, amongst their competitors and around their marketplace to inform their decisions. Across all areas of business, news content is essential.

With so much importance laid on the category, VIP regularly covers news publishers, content and aggregators. This month, Anne Jordan provides her opinion on Eureka.cc, a news product from Canada-based CEDROM-SNi. Anne was impressed with the features and functions of the product, as well as the coverage. If you're looking for additional options to feed your organisations' appetite for news content, take a closer look at this one.

For many organisations, aggregators are a central element of their content portfolios, particularly for news content. VIP's SourceWire column helps you stay informed on which sources are moving into and out of aggregators and what factors influence their movement. This month's instalment highlights changes in the major vendors and provides a comprehensive look at changes in relevant sources in Nexis.com

Additional news-related products are coming up in the VIP editorial calendar - watch for reviews of NewsEdge and Meltwater, as well as our annual comparison of Dow Jones Factiva and Nexis.com from LexisNexis.

Alongside that comparison, which will be published in November, we'll be producing the results of the third annual FreePint Research: News Content Needs and Preferences. Special thanks to research sponsors Acquire Media and Moreover for their support - they are committed to helping everyone in the industry gain a better understanding of emerging needs.

VIP readers are particularly invited to participate in the survey to gather information about what matters to you and your users when it comes to news content. Your responses are completely anonymous; complete the survey now at
http://digbig.com/5bcffc.

FreePint is also getting ready for this year's data-gathering on copyright policies and practices. Last year's participants will receive an invitation to participate, but if you didn't participate last year, register your interest by completing the form at http://web.freepint.com/go/family/research.

Financial and deal-related information is also an evergreen topic at VIP. In the second review this month, Heidi Longaberger covers TheMarkets, a unique, comprehensive resource for broker research. Touted as time-saving and capable of effective integration into workflow, TheMarkets gets positive marks from the reviewer.

In Scope and Tap the Wire touch on many of the topics you turn to VIP for every month: the impact of social media on information behaviour and practice; copyright risks and management opportunities; and changing pricing models.

Every month, we at VIP focus on bringing you practical information to support your decision-making on the information products and services. How are we doing? Share your requests for products to cover and stories to feature by emailing me at robin.neidorf@freepint.com, or use our online suggestion box at http://www.vivavip.com/suggestionbox.
