Ready for the future, and community, at SLA

Oh evolution, you cruel mistress. We fancy you so when you get us up out of the muck and on two legs, but when you push us to the point of extinction, well, not so much. We in the information community are in this one together: The pace of change is rapid and those who don't keep up aren't going to stay upright much longer.

Many of you have probably read the post by marketing Guru Seth Godin on The Future of the Library, which was quickly and wonderfully cross posted on the SLA's Future Ready 365 Blog. Godin, known for such bestselling marketing books as Purple Cow and Linchpin, left traditional publishing models behind a few years ago and founded The Domino Project which is all about speed to market (viral spread), no intermediaries (publishers, editors, professional reviewers) and no compromise (see no intermediaries). Godin walks the information evolution talk.

The future of the librarySo when he chimed in with a brief history of the book, the library and, of course, the librarian, a lot of people listened. I wrote a bit about my reaction to it in a VIP LiveWire post Community-centric reading and library eBooks. However what Godin has done — beyond generating important discourse — is issue a call to arms for info pros everywhere to "take the world of data, combine it with the people in this community and create value."

SLA is such a community-centric organisation and the welcome message on the SLA homepage asks members of this community "Are you future ready?" as invitation to its annual conference, which will be held in Philadelphia, PA 12-15 June. This year's keynote Thomas Friedman is a contrast to 2008 keynoter Seth Godin in some ways — he is a traditional publishing poster child, having received three Pulitzer prizes for his work at The New York Times and continuing to make books "the old fashioned way." What the two certainly share in common is a track record for bestsellers and a keen awareness of how times are changing and how we must change with them.

The second keynote speaker at this year's SLA conference is James Kane, a loyalty strategist. (Here's a fun evolutionary fact: There is now such a job title.) Drawing from "business, neuroscience, and behavioural psychology," Kane researches and consults on the subject of loyalty and the role it plays in human relationships and the communities we form. Here we find ourselves again, with communities at the centre of the discussion.

And so we will find ourselves at the centre of the SLA community in a few weeks, and also in the company of many of our FreePint readers, FUMSI contributors, and many of the information service providers we cover here and in VIP. We welcome the opportunity to reinforce our connection to the information community and hope you will let us know if you'll be there (email me) or drop by our table (no. 8), and give us some face to face feedback on how we can be an even better member of this community, continue to earn your loyalty, and help us all be future ready.

Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

 My Favourite Tipples

Kim DorityBy Kim Dority

Because my work takes me in a couple of different directions, I rely on a combination of topic aggregators and some insightful and/or engaging single sources to stay as up to date as possible and give me ideas to discuss with clients (primarily in the higher education space). Among my favourites:

  • Mashable daily updates: A daily round-up of cool technologies, new-product launches, emerging trends in technology or its users, and occasionally just the entertainingly strange and bizarre.

  • Smartbrief topic aggregators: The Smartbrief tagline is "We read everything. We get what matters." This free service aggregates news, articles, and blog posts on specific topics that you've selected. I track the ones for EdTech, Entrepreneurs, Leadership, Social Media, The Workforce, and Your Career, which allows me to both stay abreast of new developments and consider new ideas, which I can then share with clients.

  • Pew Daily Research Update: Pew Research Center explores and disseminates its findings on multiple topics; often research results will spark an "aha" moment regarding an emerging trend, potential market opportunity, or possible demographic change that signals a contracting market. Being able to share these numbers and suggest potential impacts with clients, when relevant, makes Info Pros look like rock stars!

  • Strategy + Business: A print magazine from Booz & Company that includes an online component, I find that the range of topics (and thought leaders) showcased in Strategy + Business to be invaluable for sparking ideas — for my own business interests as well as those of my clients.

  • Penelope Trunk: Advice at the Intersection of Work and Life: Author of Brazen Careerist and, over the years, columnist for several major media properties, Penelope Trunk provides pretty much uncensored, unfiltered, and spot-on career advice. Although she makes no bones about the fact that her Asperger's syndrome may lead her to make statements without regard to their social acceptability, I generally find her to be insightful, scary smart, and always interesting.

  • LIS Career Options (LinkedIn Group): This is a LinkedIn community I started in June 2010 with the idea that it might create an opportunity for interested LIS professionals to ask questions and share expertise about career options. Although I was assuming we'd have perhaps 25-35 members, we now have nearly 1,000 members from about 50 different countries and 145 discussions going on (for a list, click here). I learn so much from the discussions that I tend to check in at least daily. (Note that to join, you first have to join the ALA LinkedIn group — but not ALA — then go to the More tab and, select "Subgroups > LIS Career Options".)

Kim Dority, Dority & Associates, works with clients as an information strategist and content developer. In addition, she focuses on LIS career topics via a course she teaches in Alternative Career Paths for the University of Denver MLIS program and her Infonista.com blog. She and colleague Scott Brown present workshops and webinars on strategies and tactics for building resilient LIS careers. In addition, Kim is the author of multiple career-focused articles as well as Rethinking Information Work: A Career Guide for Librarians and Other Information Professionals, (Libraries Unlimited, 2006) and the forthcoming LIS Career Sourcebook (Libraries Unlimited, 2012).

  • [FreePint] Information rich, time poor and seeking ROI

Excess of riches, eh? Too much information but just too little time to enjoy it. That's been an information industry axiom for more than a decade now. Oh this wide world of the web, what bounty! Now if only I could find the time to locate what I actually need and get my job done...

Of course, the tension between our desire to know more now conflicting with the finite number of hours in the day is the force that drives our industry: we proffer products and services to maximise return on information — our industry's ROI.

When I was compiling the components of our latest effort on this front — one of our FreePint Volumes, in which we gather a variety of content from our publications to inform research on a specific subject — I was struck by the clear parallels between investing time and investing money because, ultimately, they are both about delivering value to the bottom line. This collection of resources, the FreePint Volume: Insight & Resources for Financial Services, is particularly suited to meet the needs of those in financial services industries (It includes five product reviews and two FUMSI Reports at 40% off the price of purchasing the items on their own.)

FreePint Webinars Launch with Social Media Marketing
    for Corporate Libraries

Social Media is among the hottest topics today. We've heard a great deal about how these tools can be used for marketing. However, anunder-served area in which social media and social networking can be leveraged is inside organisations. The debut of its the FreePint Webinar series with a two-part Webinar on "Social Media Marketing for Corporate Libraries" was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Well-known industry speaker Scott Brown of Social Information Group led the two-part Webinar which is filled with practical information and real world examples for those seeking to effectively leverage social media tools - such as Twitter, blogs, forums and much more - inside their organisations. With the tips and suggestions Brown provided, corporate library staff and information managers can foster communication, collaboration and increase awareness of their services to key stakeholder groups.

An introduction to "Linked and Open Data" for Information Professionals

Zach BeauvaisBy Zach Beauvais
FUMSI: Share

The linking of parts of documents and other materials offered by the Linked Data approach to the web, coupled with the open data philosophy adopted by governments, could offer researchers the chance to identify links between data not possible before and save an enormous amount of time. Zach Beauvais explains how it works.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'A document is fundamentally a container for information. You read a document to obtain the facts and figures it contains. Linked Data is, most simply, a way to link together the individual bits and pieces of information (data). This has been called the Web of Things because we can link to the "thing" the document contains. Open Data is a philosophy of publishing data for reuse rather than a "read-only" approach, so Linked and Open Data together create the potential for changing the way information research can be carried out in future. Increasingly state information from governments in both the UK and US are releasing data in these formats so tools that query Linked Data are likely to become part of the research landscape for many years to come.'

Managing the flow of information with social tools

Stuart BarrBy Stuart Barr
FUMSI: Manage

As consumer social tools like Twitter and Facebook start to encroach on our professional lives should we see this as a blessing or a threat? Stuart Barr looks at the many benefits which these tools can bring to the organisation, from being able to collaborate seamlessly with colleagues around the world to finding out what thought leaders in your sector are saying.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'It can be a tough job keeping up with what's going on in your personal life, but some great tools have emerged to help us stay connected to our social networks and keep up-to-date. Social tools like blogs and wikis also present new opportunities for working in a much more dynamic and collaborative way, and consumer tools like Twitter and Facebook have given us concepts such as activity streams, profiles and microblogging, which can be applied in the enterprise to great effect. These social, collaborative environments can be applied to organisations of any shape or size but they are particularly beneficial to very distributed, knowledge intensive or project-led organisations because that is where connecting with the right people and having the right information at the right time is most important.'

VIP issue 90VIP Magazine: The evolution of market information -
A VIP Editorial

By Ville Vanhala

At the same time that companies, industry associations and governments started constructing their first websites, I started my professional career working with business information in the research team of a global strategy consulting firm. It was a revolutionary period in which facts about companies, industries and even nations were becoming available easily and instantly online. During the 15 years that have followed, a lot of the change in online information has taken the form of incremental developments. Better websites, better interfaces in business information providers' services and constantly improving availability of data. But in the past couple of years, as part of our work at Global Intelligence Alliance to support global companies with market information, I have felt that there are again more fundamental shifts happening in the way that information is consumed in business contexts. For example, there are some interesting shifts in which information is important for business users.

This month's VIP product reviews connect well with some of these changes. Firstly, it seems that interest in macroeconomic intelligence has hugely increased, especially during the economic uncertainty of the past few years but, quite naturally, also due to the longer term trend of globalisation. Secondly, we have all had the opportunity to witness the emergence of a totally a new type of information content: information in social media. We have seen a quickly growing interest, even necessity, to monitor discussions in blogs, microblogs, discussion forums, video sharing sites and other new media.

Considering the first trend — generally increased appetite for macroeconomic data — it is interesting to read this issue's first product review in which Penny Crossland reviews IHS DataInsight 4.1, a workflow tool for using economic data and forecasts. Clearly, it is one of the advanced solutions in this area and the tool offers a range of possibilities for organisations to integrate economic data into the intelligence on their operating environment. For readers familiar with IHS, the review will serve well to compare observations on some of the strengths of this product. For those readers whose work profile does not include economic analysis (at least not yet ...), it will offer an interesting glimpse of the possibilities of macroeconomic market intelligence. It may perhaps trigger some inspiration to consider integrating more macroeconomic monitoring into the range of analysis one's team or organisation works with and what can be done with state of the art tools in that area.

Thinking of the other trend mentioned earlier — the emergence of social media as a totally new type of information for organisations to tap into — Scott Brown's product review of Radian6, a tool for social media monitoring and engagement, is a very interesting read. The story of Radian6 is part of the emergence of a whole new industry around monitoring social media. In just a few years, more than 200 social media monitoring solutions have appeared on the market for information users to choose from. Radian6 has been one of the success stories in the field. In just a few years it has become a recognised brand in social media monitoring and has played its part in making organisations aware of possibilities for social media monitoring an exciting trend for those of us in the information industry to monitor as we keep an eye out for what's next.

Ville Vanhala

Ville Vanhala has 15 years of experience in international market intelligence. As co-founder of Global Intelligence Alliance (GIA), he played a key role in developing the company's research and market monitoring capability and service concepts on a global scale.
