First things first: we bring news that, at the end of March, our esteemed colleague Stephen Phillips will be retiring.Stephen has made a major and immeasurable contribution to the information industry. The Jinfo team and community are so lucky and honoured to have benefited from his analytical depth, commitment and networking, which has shaped so much of what we do.
We thank Stephen warmly for his outstanding contribution to Jinfo, and to the information industry. If you wish to message him directly yourself, please email stephen.phillips@jinfo.com or contact him via LinkedIn.
Information teams and AI
The year has begun with a strong focus on AI, and how it is reshaping the work of information teams.
Behind the scenes at Jinfo, we have been researching this systematically – conducting structured interviews, holding focused member conversations and analysing developments across the network.
Our aim is to move beyond surface observations, towards really understanding what AI adoption means for information team structures, workflows, risk management and leadership priorities.
This work is reflected in two new Jinfo Reports (which are summarised on the Jinfo Blog):
- “Information management at a crossroads – interviews with Jinfo Subscribers” – Report and Blog
- “Seven priorities for information leaders in an AI-enabled environment” – Report and Blog.
The conclusion is clear: as AI becomes embedded in everyday practice, the role of information professionals remains central - ensuring quality, applying judgement and guiding effective use.
IP and AI licensing
In March, our research is shifting towards intellectual property and AI licensing.
As AI tools become integrated into research and content workflows, questions around rights, risk and compliance are becoming more complex – and more urgent.
We are currently gathering insight from Jinfo subscribers, vendors and legal perspectives, on:
- Licensing models and contractual risk
- Data rights and training-data use
- Compliance and governance frameworks.
This work will feed into two upcoming discussions:
- An FT and Jinfo co-hosted in-person event “Licensing the Future” in London, UK (19th March 2026)
- A dedicated “Licensed content and AI” Jinfo Community session (24th March 2026).
We will continue to share our findings as this work progresses, and look forward to discussing these developments with subscribers in the coming weeks.
As always, we welcome your perspectives as we shape the next phase of research together.
