Item

We regularly conduct interviews with information managers across many industries. Based on recent interviews with information professionals in manufacturing companies, their pressing issues are:

  • Maximising and communicating the value of the information centre
  • Making information more visible and accessible throughout the enterprise
  • Staying informed about sources of technical literature as well as more generalist business resources.

Many FreePint resources are directly relevant to the projects and priorities identified as the most pressing in the manufacturing and industrial sector; below follows a selection of content tailored to these needs:

Maximising the Value of the Information Centre to the Enterprise

The pervasive priority for information centre managers in the manufacturing sector, as in most sectors, is maximising and communicating the value of the information centre.

In some cases, metrics are a key focus and in others the focus is on highlighting the value of strategic projects, such as the implementation or improvement of knowledge management systems. This organisational priority aligns with the FreePint Topic of Value.

Relevant FreePint Community:

November events include an in-person gathering in New York on November 10th, Visibility and Value to End Users; and in December teleconferences on Current Awareness Options and Value Proposition (2nd or 4th) and In-Depth Research Options and Value Proposition (16th or 18th).

Making Content More Visible Throughout the Enterprise

As more premium content is delivered to end users in different ways, information centres are working on best practices for making that content more visible and accessible throughout their organisations.

Particular areas of interest for manufacturing firms include methods and risks of delivery via mobile devices, managing distribution and access via social media, and enterprise content management systems and repositories.

This organisational priority aligns with the FreePint Topic of Technology. In particular, the content in the Categories of Collaborative and social toolsContent managementIntranets and Knowledge management are relevant to this priority.

Coming soon: the FreePint Topic Series: Making Information Visible, will examine the challenges from many angles, including case studies, technology, behaviour and measurement. Register your interest to receive targeted updates.
