Abstract

AI adoption is rising, but understanding is lagging.

A recent Jinfo Community session explored how internal education, governance, and collaboration are essential for responsible implementation. From legal concerns to tool evaluation, information managers have a vital role to play.

AI is reshaping how organisations think, work and compete. But whilst the pressure to adopt is real, every layer of the organisation, especially end-users, need a baseline understanding of how to use AI tools effectively and ethically.

This blog includes some of the findings in our recent report "How can information managers bridge the AI knowledge gap?", which includes:

  • Practical steps for information managers looking to influence AI education
  • Common pitfalls and lessons learned from real-world adoption efforts
  • Insights into how organisations are adapting legal, contractual and data practices in response to AI
  • Actions you can take now to become a trusted advisor in your organisation’s AI evolution.

It’s not just about tech anymore

The conversation in a recent Jinfo Community session revealed a shared concern: while enthusiasm for AI is sky-high, understanding is inconsistent.

Senior leaders may grasp the strategic opportunity, but the day-to-day reality (i.e. how AI is actually used by end-users) remains patchy. This disconnect can undermine even the best tools and intentions.

We explored how organisations are beginning to invest in internal education, training, and practical tools like standardised prompt libraries to support safer, more consistent AI use. But the work has only just begun.

Innovation meets governance

As with most emerging technologies, the promise of AI has its share of pitfalls, including:

  • copyright risk
  • compliance issues
  • data integrity challenges.

Rather than stifle progress, good governance provides a framework that encourages experimentation.

Our discussion uncovered how some organisations are starting to build frameworks that enable innovation without putting their organisations at risk.

Why information managers can’t sit this one out

Our conversation emphasised the pivotal role information professionals can (and should) play in AI adoption.

Information managers’ experience in managing content, overseeing data quality, and navigating legal constraints, makes us ideal partners in shaping responsible, sustainable AI strategies.

But we need to act, whether by joining internal committees, supporting governance efforts, or simply making our expertise visible to relevant decision makers.
