Here we look at some of the key findings.

Jinfo's new report "Upskilling for AI: how information managers are building confidence and capability" examines five key areas for working with GenAI:

  • Shifting mindsets
  • Asking better questions
  • Developing prompting skills
  • Embedding critical thinking
  • Building governance that supports safe experimentation.

As a participant in a recent Jinfo Community session stated:

"We don't want to be the team that always says no.
We want to show people how they can use AI responsibly."

One of the clearest insights is that prompting is becoming a core research skill, similar to conducting a good reference interview.

Critical thinking is another core skill. Studies suggest up to 70% of users accept AI outputs at face value, a serious risk in regulated sectors or where information has to be 100% correct.

The report also highlights growing concerns about governance, including copyright, licensing, and data usage, particularly around tools like Microsoft Copilot.

Good governance isn't about saying "no"; it's about creating an environment that lets colleagues explore safely.

Upskilling is about more than learning tools, it's about developing the judgment to know when (and when not) to use them.
