Robin NeidorfThere's always a gap between the creation of a cool new tool or technology and how it gets embedded into everyday use. When I first started writing web sites back in 1996, few companies could figure out what the web was really for. Today, it's central to how business gets done.

For the past several years, companies have tried to figure out how to extract the most value from social media. FUMSI contributing editor Joanna Ptolomey commissioned a series of three case studies, the second of which has just been published: Contributor Paul Wilkinson draws on 20+ years of experience as a PR professional for the construction industry and provides a helpful summary of key lessons to make social media an effective component of PR.

If you're the one who's come up with the visionary technology, then you might find another recent addition to the FUMSI database of interest: Heidi Longaberger assembles a helpful summary of resources on venture capital. Her coverage includes the marquee brand names in our industry as well as newer entrants, some using crowdsourcing to enable users to improve the data, not just access it.

Widgets and GadgetsIt's not unusual for the business world to lag behind consumer culture in adopting new technologies. Case in point: accessing content on mobile devices. While we're inseparable from our pocket-sized devices, we don't seem to be doing much advanced information interaction on them... yet. The just-published 'FUMSI Report: Folio on Widgets and Gadgets' includes the results of our survey showing business information professionals are mostly using their phones and other gadgets to 1) make calls and 2) send plain text messages, with sending email not far behind. At the bottom of the list? Accessing premium content. Because this is such a fast-changing area, we're keeping the survey open and will be publishing updates -- we'd love to hear how you're taking advantage of your mobility, so participate now. (We also invite you to register your interest in participating in future research projects.)

Not long ago, a new platform called Twitter came on the scene. Entire businesses have been built around the value of a Tweet, but many professionals view 140 characters with scepticism. Consider joining an upcoming SIIA Content Division 'brown bag' programme: 'It's not about Ashton and Oprah: how to engage a professional audience using Twitter'. I'll be copresenting with fellow Content Division board member Barry Graubart from Alacra and Michelle Leder of Footnoted.org. The programme is on 17 March, at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time (5:30 p.m. UK) and promises a lot of practical tips on identifying business strategy and then leveraging Twitter to work towards it.

As someone who spends much of her time within close range of a computer I rely on the Internet to support both my work and social life.

  • WordPress
    In summer 2009 I started with a blank slate to establish the online presence for the Library and Information Science Research Coalition. On the basis of personal research conducted mainly amongst the social media savvy members of the Edinburgh Coffee Morning I opted for a WordPress blog for the Coalition web site. I have been really impressed with both its functionality and the ease with which I can update the site at http://lisresearch.org

  • Bit.ly
    I have been using shortened URLs for a long time without realising their full functionality. Recently Brian Kelly (incidentally another WordPress blogger - see http://ukwebfocus.wordpress.com/) pointed me to the bit.ly website where you can make, and access-track in real time, custom shortened URLs. For example, the shortened URL that I have created for the LIS Research Coalition actually makes sense, and is memorable as http://bit.ly/lisrc, as is that for the LIS Coalition conference on Monday 28th June at the British Library Conference Centre: http://bit.ly/lisrc10.

  • BBC
    When I spent summer 1995 working with Cindy Hill at the Sun library in Mountain View I considered a permanent move to California. However, I eventually rejected the idea largely because I missed the BBC. Of course, this would be much less of an issue now that there is access to most BBC content over the web from outside the UK. My principal uses of the BBC website are non-work related: checking the weather forecast, catching up with missed radio programmes at weekends while I cook, checking the news etc.

  • YouTube
    I like to vary the content of my classes at Edinburgh Napier and a great resource for short clips to break up and illustrate theoretical material in lectures is YouTube. For example, David Gurteen has uploaded some great material for Knowledge Management. (YouTube is also where to find the oeuvre of the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre. If you have not seen these wee guys before, check out their iPad and Facebook sketches: (iPad), (Facebook))

  • Facebook and Twitter
    Choosing Facebook and Twitter as Tipples may be as obvious as declaring a love of drinking water. With these tools, even though I work very long hours I can still be connected to my friends and family through Facebook, and to distant work contacts through Twitter (mediated through Tweetdeck). I spend a lot of time here...

Based on the well established Plunkett industry almanacs, Plunkett Research Online offers continuously updated overviews of 32 industry sectors, providing market trends, statistics, company profiles, associations and glossaries. Putting it through its paces for VIP, Penny Crossland finds it very end-user friendly, with clear search and results screens, and affordable even for independent information professionals. She's particularly impressed by the customisable Build-A-Report facility - but the bias towards US content will makes it a less useful resource for researchers elsewhere.

Company Watch claims that one in four of all companies that score low on its proprietary H-Score for company health will either fail or require financial restructuring within three years. VIP's Anne Jordan tests the effectiveness of this and its two other analytical tools - Risk Rating and Probability of Distress - commending the intuitive interface and the flexibility of data manipulation to create 'What if?' scenarios. However she also notes that currently private company data is available for the UK only, there's a 2-3 week uploading delay after a company's results come out, and no automatic alert.
