Social media graces

I have often said that participation in social media is like participation in social life in that, while it can be approached strategically and systematically, at its core it requires an incalculable chemistry to make a genuine connection. This intrinsic challenge in leveraging social in a professional context was reinforced by my fellow panellists in a recent Business Breakfast on the topic of Social Media Success: Uncovering What Works, hosted by WBZ (CBS Boston) Radio (which you can watch here).

Social media gracesWe were asked to bring examples of companies that are effectively leveraging social media to reveal best practices, and I shared some of them in a VIP LiveWire post on the event. Takeaways included being a positive force in your given community, interaction instead of one-way messaging and being authentic - human, if you will.

As if social interaction weren't hard enough on a personal level, it is even more difficult to interact with a genuine personality while lurking behind a company logo, corporate messaging in hand. And there are those who question whether or not the effort is worth it. As VIP LiveWire blogger Tim Buckley Owen wrote in a recent post, "Most businesses still struggle to find the Holy Grail of engagement with customers on social media ... but the real question is whether social network users want the big brands to be there at all".

Certainly, there's a lot of questionable behaviour in the professional social media space - from that blowhard who never listens to anyone else (much less responds), to that awkward inappropriate-subject talker who never seems to be on the same wavelength as the rest of the people in a conversation.

However, given the examples my fellow panellists and I were able to share, there are those who are navigating social media successfully in a professional context. And, like finding a role model for how to navigate your particular office politics, finding social media exemplars in your field (or a similar one) is one of the best ways to develop social media graces.

In any given context, there are social mores to be aware of, specific areas of interest and other community-centric behaviours that help one navigate the social media scene. FUMSI, which is written by information practitioners for their peers, has recently featured a few excellent examples of social media insights that readers can relate to. In recent issues of FUMSI Magazine, for example, Andrew Spong examined social media's impact on the pharmaceutical industry and Abigail Sawyer looked at how the BBC World Service is leveraging Twitter.

If you are looking for an overview of applied social media, FUMSI contributing editor Marcy Phelps has collected five excellent examples in her recent FUMSI Report: Folio on social media for research, and she offers additional insights in a FUMSI Forum post. Fellow FUMSI contributing editor Martin Belam also offers his observations about the "new kid on the social networking block" Google+ on the FUMSI Forum.

FUMSI is written by the community, for the community, and we invite you to join the conversation. Lend your voice on topics of interest to your peers - and not just on social media. We want to hear what is working for you, what challenges you face, and how you are overcoming them as you work to Find, Use, Manage, and Share Information. Post a comment to the FUMSI Forum, message us on Twitter, or reach out to any FUMSI practice area editor with your story: We're listening.

Best regards,
Michelle Manafy,
Director of Content

 My Favourite Tipples

Jane Macoustra By Jane Macoustra

I am a flexible freelance consultant who works across the spectrum of the Information Professional roles. When undertaking research, I can be asked any type of question, and so my research skills have to accommodate this diversity. In order to continually hone my skills - and it's a bit of a hobby - I answer research questions on the BUSLIB-L Digest discussion list on a range of topics, which are asked by my peer group. In fact, the reason I wrote my book was because there were hundreds of good resources that I "fell over" during the course of my career, and it seemed a shame to keep such a large amount of tacit knowledge to myself. I am still finding great new resources all the time.

  • Nouriel Roubini's Global Economics and the Nouriel Roubini Blog: If you want to keep up with what happening with the global economy, the man known as "Dr Doom" is in a league of his own. I don't subscribe to the fee-based service, but I find the free stuff invaluable and knowledgeable.

  • Guido Fawkes' Order-Order blog: This blog is not just for fun, because it exposes the actual or potential opportunity for bad behaviour and dodgy dealings in the political world and highlights the behaviour of the rich and famous. They are all fair game on this site, and reputations can be ruined by 'tittle tattle, plots, rumours and conspiracy". The archive is a goldmine for client identification and reputational risk issues. Check out the "Labels" section on the right hand side; the first time I saw this section, I was attracted to "Snouts in the trough" and "Totty watch". There's a massive topical variety here and something for all.

  • Internet Evolution: With the tagline "Where intellect meets the Internet", this has been a long-term favourite of mine. This macrosite about the future of the Internet is must-have reading. Take a look at this weeks' offering with the Editor's (Nicole Ferraro) blog and a moderated blogosphere of Internet experts, along with public commentary. It's a lively site that's packed with a great quantity of topical information. There's also a Web Wise World Tutorial section, which helps you keep up with new developments.

  • BNET: I have an e-mail notification for the Life at Work section of this website because it addresses all aspects of working life for people of all ages. There are many featured articles and I receive notification when they are published, which allows me to select the articles that particularly interest me.

  • Martin's Money Tips: Everyone is feeling the pinch to some degree right now with the global downturn. I have subscribed to the weekly email update of Martin's so I can have a quick peek to check there is nothing I want to purchase at a special price or offer. These offers can be either online or in the High Street. I've managed to benefit from a number of offers that I have read about at Martin's. I recently purchased a full set of MS-2010 at an incredibly good knock-down price when I read about it here, because I'm a student, and I qualified for the deal. How about that then?

Jane Macoustra is a very diverse and experienced Information Professional. She has worked for many global organisations and lived in Hong Kong for 2 1/2 years when she was working in investment banking. At the moment she runs a small consultancy, Tai-Pan Research and the Virtual City Girl. She's also an author, speaker and trainer, and she writes a blog that is attached to her book on Internet research for business - Global Research without leaving your desk: Travelling the world with your mouse as companion (find it here). She is active on the Boards of SLA-Europe and the Asian Chapter.

  • [DocuTicker] DocuTips on information accessibility

For information professionals, making information accessible is a central goal. Whether through traditional indexing and classification or contemporary website design, the purpose behind all forms of organisation of information has always been to assist the enquirer in finding what they seek. That this purpose has not always been achieved is true; users can be as unclear as to how best to explore a website as they ever were in understanding the Dewey Decimal system.

The way in which information can nowadays flow as electronic streams of data has serious implications both for governments and citizens. From the government standpoint, there are issues of whether or not certain information should be 'classified'; this use of the word is somewhat ironic since here it often indicates a denial of access to information, rather than the attempt to place it in a logical category and so make it easier to find. And, as at least one article in this collection indicates, an over-protective approach to information can even hamper the efforts of counter-terrorist agencies which presumably consider themselves to be on the same side...

  • [FreePint] Forecasting news needs

We've had a rough weather year here in Connecticut including everything from record-setting snow and rain falls to an earthquake and hurricane. This took an even more extreme and bizarre turn on 29 October when we were hit with a nor'easter, which is a very special sort of unpleasant storm native to the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada with characteristics similar to a hurricane, only with snow. I'll admit this year has given me a keen understanding of why my husband so treasures his subscription to the premium Accuweather service.

Certainly, post-storm, it has been cathartic to see the many reader-submitted photos of this storm's impact on our community and other affected areas. However, knowing what's coming and being prepared have a great deal of value, particularly when we are talking about events that will shut down power and internet access, even impacting mobile phone coverage, state-wide...

"Predux" - How to improve conferences through peer-reviewed rehearsals

Theba IslamBy Theba Islam
FUMSI: Share

Conferences are great places to get up-to-date and generally build your knowledge, but how often has a conference been less than perfect because of the quality of some presentations? This is where the "predux" comes in. As Theba Islam explains, this allows speakers to test out their presentations, and receive constructive criticism, from a small group of their peers before an event.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'If you are a conference speaker, then there are plenty of places that will offer to coach you in the art of public speaking. What these courses won't give you, however, is an honest critique of the content of your talks. The basic premise of a "predux" is to have a small group of peers from the topic area get together with people who are going to be talking at a specific event, and allow each speaker to rehearse their talk.'

Reinventing librarians: Part 2 - Use knowledge of resources and use to enhance the procurement process

By Marlene Gebauer
FUMSI: Manage

By their very nature, librarians are good at knowing what their users need. They listen, they understand the organisation, they monitor usage of current resources, and they hear about and evaluate new resources, which puts them in an ideal position to provide valuable input to the procurement process. In Part 2 of the series on reinventing librarians, Marlene Gebauer shows how this is another way for librarians to add value.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 'Librarians, who by nature of education and job function, understand the nuances between resources and have the institutional knowledge of how they are used, are in an optimal position to impact procurement decisions. Holding the necessary metrics and operating as natural vendor gatekeepers, librarians are in a unique position to negotiate licensing agreements or to assist in negotiation, by offering analysis and opinion regarding what resources are needed, who is using them and how, and what aspects of resources are useful or less useful in terms of a law firm's practices.'

VIP issue 95VIP Magazine: On the Horizon

VIP Magazine features VIP Horizon, a brief summary of important news in the information industry, interpreted to help information managers communicate upward regarding strategy, risk management and planning for change.

VIP Magazine: 95 features the following in VIP Horizon:

Senior managers tend to be uninformed about the nature of cyber threats to their business and don't know where to turn for advice, says a report from the influential Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House. But government can only provide incentives to encourage a remedy; it can't mandate it.

At a time when governments are minded to require ever more stringent privacy protection online, the report concludes that some organisations seem to want to remain detached from the security debate for as long as possible - an approach which it regards as "inadvisable in such a fast-moving environment".

Managers are interested in moving from tactical, siloed approaches to governance of their information to more strategic approaches that apply across departments and processes, early results from new FreePint research show. But they still tend to think in terms of complying with regulation, rather than addressing the potential for increasing the value of their information assets through improved governance.

Information managers are recognising that copyright, data protection, records management and workflow integration are interlinked. A priority area for them in the coming year is improving that integration, to ensure the right information is in front of users at the right time.

***

Online defamation cases in England and Wales have doubled in a year, and even some employees support the blocking of social network use at work. But these findings may be misleading; the number of cases increased to 16 from just seven, and employees are actually looking for guidance, not protection from social media.

Almost a third of staff believe that online security is entirely the boss's responsibility. Some recent helpful advice from the United Kingdom Advisory, Conciliation & Arbitration Service suggests that, even though social media interaction is fast and permanent, employers shouldn't be tempted into a knee-jerk disciplinary response.

  • Getting strategic with information governance

Information management requires a balance of moving information around an organisation and ensuring that it doesn't inadvertently leak out. How an organisation governs the flow of information has a direct impact on the overall value of that information: inadequate intellectual property protection lowers the proprietary value of that proprietary information. Errors in managing copyright-protected information increases the risk associated with that information. Leaks in customer data create the potential for enormous costs...

What has most profoundly struck me about Steve Jobs is that he was a man on a mission. He was a man who, along with his company, pushed us to think about and do things differently. Apple stood out as an island, separate and distinct from the way most approached information, content and technology. And, although the broader market has adopted some of its approaches and ideas, we still wait with baited breath every time Apple has a new launch such as the iPhone 4S this week...
