FreePint supports the value of information in the enterprise. We do this by publishing practical articles and reports on information practice, content and strategy.

Ask us how FreePint can help your organisation »

Robin NeidorfLast week during the SLA annual conference, I enjoyed the opportunity to moderate two sessions:

  • The first was a roundtable discussion bringing together buyers and sellers of content products and services; discussion covered how to develop and plan in a multi-platform world, and how to collaborate to support end-users.

  • The second was a panel discussion of buyer and seller perspectives on "meaningful measures" -- how buyers and sellers address the concept of measurement with regard to subscription products, and the impact of content products on business outcomes.

In both sessions, and in the numerous conversations I had with other attendees who took the time to visit the FreePint booth, a number of "shadow participants" were also in the room, informing the discussion. In addition to their own needs, information managers were representing the needs of:

  • Senior executives with the financial power to sign or cancel contracts
  • End users wanting access to ever-more powerful products
  • End users ignoring the products on their desks -- often unwittingly putting their organisations at risk
  • Heads of such departments as marketing, sales and business development, all requiring more powerful tools, as well as training for their teams

Increasingly, information managers and information professionals have responsibility for helping everyone understand, use, and make the most of information resources of all kinds.

FreePint's recent product evolution supports that solidifying responsibility. The FreePint Subscription puts hundreds of relevant articles and reports into the hands of users, who can then share them with anyone in the organisation.

Just this week, subscribers gained access to new reports to share with their intranet managers, sales and business development teams, and scientific researchers. That's in addition to more than two dozen individual subscription-access articles published so far in July, each of which can also be shared with relevant colleagues.

Take a minute to complete our form, "How can FreePint help?" I'd love to learn more about your priorities and show you the value of a FreePint Subscription.

 My Favourite Tipples

Scott BrownBy Scott Brown

This version of Tipples is a little different, as I focus on mobile apps for smartphones.

  • ArticleSearch (available on Apple/iOS and Android, free) allows you to perform mobile searches across a wide selection of well-known databases, such as CiteSeer, JSTOR, WorldCat, ERIC, and IEEE Xplore. With the paid version, you can combine as many databases as you like, but you can give it a try for free. This is a quick and easy way to perform searches on-the-go.

  • World Newspapers (Android, free) provides access to more than 6000 worldwide newspapers and online sources, categorized by popularity, continent, and country.

  • Dragon Dictation (available on Apple/iOS, free) uses Dragon's excellent translation software to convert your speech into email, text, or social media posts. Check out the Nuance Mobile Life site for more apps.

  • Join.me (Apple/iOS and Android, free) allows you to see anyone sharing their screen via Join.me on your mobile device. You can see the user's screen, and also participate in chat and voice interaction - all on your mobile device. Try it out - it's impressive. The app and the browser-based version are both free.

  • FastCustomer (available on Apple/iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, free) will dial a wide selection of customer service numbers, wait on the line for you, and call you back when you are connected to a live person. I've regained many hours of my life by using this app.

Check out more great apps here, and get an ongoing feed of great apps by following @socialinfo and the Twitter hashtag #60Apps.

Workers are increasingly expecting -- and expected to -- collaborate through tools that connect them to each other easily, seamlessly and without regard to organisational hierarchy. The tools that support this kind of collaboration improve constantly. For them to be effective rather than chaotic, however, they need to be implemented thoughtfully, with close attention to user behaviour and needs, organisational culture, and overall business objectives.

  • Sales prospecting with event triggers: iSell review
By Jan Knight on Tuesday, 24th July 2012
Writing a recent product review of iSell from OneSource almost made me wish I were involved in sales! As a researcher I love people to ask me things like "How did you find that?" or "How do you know that?" A sales person might well hear those same questions from a prospect during a cold call if they've used iSell as their prospecting tool.

By Robin Neidorf on Monday, 23rd July 2012
A recent roundtable hosted by the Software and Information Industry Association at the SLA annual conference brought together buyers and sellers of content products to discuss key issues facing the industry. Creative dialogue on the challenges of product development and enterprise content management in a multi-platform environment got buyers and sellers considering ways they can work together to resolve problems and make information work more effective.

  • Legal innovation - bad news for lawyers and info pros?

  • Source Update July 2012: What's happening with Factiva

  • Opening up information - the best opportunity ever?
By Tim Buckley Owen on Friday, 20th July 2012
Britain's government has just struck a blow for open information by requiring publicly funded research to be made freely available, not hidden behind a paywall. It's a good start - but there are still plenty of other ways in which the information playing field needs to be levelled.

  • Key requirements for the enterprise market for mobile content
By Robin Neidorf on Thursday, 19th July 2012
Unlike individuals and small businesses, large organisations must content with complex issues when considering how to deliver content to mobile devices. Chief amongst these concerns are security and authentication. Information managers who spoke with FreePint as part of our research on the enterprise market for mobile content also cited the lack of standards in the industry as a key risk factor preventing them from acting more quickly.

  • Technology shifts and enterprise market for mobile content
By Robin Neidorf on Wednesday, 18th July 2012
Changes in technology have a deep impact on how and when organisations can invest in mobile content deployment. Interviews for the research report, Enterprise Market for Mobile Content, reveal some frustration with lack of standards and the pace of change.

  • Is content becoming anti-social?
By Dean Mason on Wednesday, 18th July 2012
There are more newspapers than ever before putting their digital content behind paywalls, particularly as there is evidence to suggest this may provide some mitigation to their flagging print sales. This no doubt offers some relief to the media industry, but as a result we seem to be moving backwards.

  • Corporate user demands for mobile content: Top-down and bottom-up
By Robin Neidorf on Tuesday, 17th July 2012
FreePint's research study, Enterprise Market for Mobile Content 2012, provides insight into how information managers in a range of global organisations face demand from their users -- those at the top of the organisation and those at the junior levels.

  • Key challenges for legal ebooks
By Dean Mason on Tuesday, 17th July 2012
Jean O'Grady's recent article on The Future of eBooks in Law Firms provides an excellent overview of the legal ebook market. She raises some key issues that are perhaps holding back the proliferation of legal ebooks in law firms. It could be argued that by coming up with the answers could result a "Kindle moment" for this sector.
