FreePint supports the value of information in the enterprise. We do this by publishing practical articles and reports on information practice, content and strategy.

Ask us how FreePint can help your organisation »

Robin NeidorfThe close of 2012 brought two reports on FreePint research projects relating to news content: We published the latest results of our annual Survey on News Needs and Preferences as well as our Comparative Report on News Products. As much as we see rapid change in the industry -- almost on a monthly basis -- the importance of the news category in figuring out what matters in the corporate content portfolio doesn't seem to fade.

Another evergreen topic recently featured is that of data discovery. Contributor Jonathan Jacobsen shares the where, why and how of diving into disparate datasets efficiently and effectively.

Other recent articles that have caught my eye include coverage of Thomson Reuters' acquisition of The PLC (requires paid FreePint Subscription), a move which is sure to cause significant upheaval in the market for core legal content, particularly for UK law firms; and new research that documents the research value of Wikipedia, of all things (requires paid FreePint Subscription). No, really.

We've got a number of exciting new developments to share later this month, including a series of 20 mini-reviews on products named as finalists in the CODiE awards of excellence by the Software and Information Industry Association, and a Community of Practice on Mobile Deployment of Content for information managers facing the challenges of meeting their users' (and executives') demand to unlock content from the desktop. As with all reviews, our mini-reviews are included in the FreePint Subscription. The CoP on Mobile Deployment guiding participants through an interactive curriculum as well as bring them together for peer-to-peer learning will be available only to companies with a FreePint Subscription.

 My Favourite Tipples

Roberta De GregorioBy Roberta De Gregorio

I both want and need to know what's happening in the industry and like to vary my news sources. I love sites that provide you with a quick overview of the latest stories that you can then explore further. The sources that really stand out for me and inspire me to return time after time are those that enable me to go a little 'off piste' and to access stories that are completely unrelated to the original news quest.

  • hereisthecity: An amusingly written, timely and interactive source of City news. You can read as much or as little as you like, but most importantly, you always feel up-to-date. Not only does it provide you with the facts, but also gives you an insight into the lives of those at the coal-face of banking.

  • Financial Times 6AM Cut: A perfectly timed email that provides a neat overview of the latest City news. You can digest the headlines while drinking your coffee in the morning or whilst on the subway. If subscribing to the London, New York and Asian rounds ups, you are kept continuously updated with email round ups at breakfast, lunch and dinner time!

  • SLA ListServ: SLA's email group keeps you connected in terms of the challenges faced by the industry, but also keeps you in-the-loop on local events and get-togethers. It provides a true network of peers that can be conducted seamlessly on a virtual level, but also successfully facilitates local events, both formal and informal.

  • Twitter: An obvious but essential tool. Any subject is covered within seconds of searching. I think that for me, it's the speed with which you can access thousands of records for one topic that makes this source valuable. Add to that the vast range of sources - from organisations to individuals around the world - and you can be sure that most angles are covered.

  • IMDB: Everything I could possibly want to know about films! It has a great smartphone application for those facts you need to access anywhere and at any time. It also helps settle debates and does so quickly!

Yippy acquired the Clusty search engine in 2010 and markets itself as a safe metasearch engine that filters what it deems to be unsuitable results.

Jonathan Jacobsen outlines just what constitutes a resource discovery interface and explains why many public and academic libraries have been adopting these interfaces over the past three to four years. He highlights some of the most popular commercial and open source systems and explains why smaller libraries and cultural organisations should also consider introducing them. The article includes useful pointers for selecting and implementing a discovery interface - there are many factors to consider.

  • And Then There Were Two - Thomson Reuters' Acquisition of PLC
By Tim Buckley Owen on Tuesday, 8th January 2013
What will Thomson Reuters' acquisition of the Practical Law Company mean for customers in law firms? Can they expect cost savings, or - bearing in mind that the company has fallen foul of European Commission antitrust rules recently - might TR become too dominant among legal information providers? Survey data from FreePint suggests that, after expenditure on the Big Three - TR, LexisNexis and PLC - there's currently little left over for content from other players such as Bloomberg or Wolters Kluwer.

  • Wikipedia Beats Traditional Media at Breaking News?
By Penny Crossland on Friday, 4th January 2013
We seem to trust breaking news provided by the 140 characters allowed on Twitter more than the in-depth articles to be found on Wikipedia but should we revise our viewpoint? And should traditional media outlets include more input from amateurs in their reports? Penny Crossland considers crowdsourced news from Twitter and Wikipedia along with research from Brian Keegan, a post-doctoral research fellow in computational science who specialises in information flows of news output on Wikipedia and recently analysed the way that reports on the Connecticut school shooting developed on the site.

  • Intranet and Other Predictions for 2013
By James Mullan on Thursday, 27th December 2012
Tis the season to be jolly and it would seem timely to make some predictions as to the developments we're likely to see around intranets and social media tools in 2013. In James Mullan's final post of 2012, he finishes with some predictions for 2013 and anticipates the reinvention of intranet managers as digital workplace managers.

  • Who's More Afraid of BYOD - Enterprises or Users?
By Tim Buckley Owen on Thursday, 27th December 2012
With mobile devices more widely used than ever (according to figures from Ofcom), the Bring Your Own Device or BYOD movement continues to grow. Gartner warns of the corporate security issues this raises, and Kroll reports a significant increase in internal fraud - all possibly reinforced by SplashData's findings about continuing poor use of passwords. But developments like NewsGator's mobile Social Sites platform and InsideView's Private Connections suggest that employees may need to guard against intrusion from employers too - unless, of course, they can regard their personal data as an asset to be traded.

The purchaser, Cannondale Investments, specialises in acquiring "data-enabled" information services. What will the future hold for OneSource's business intelligence and prospecting tools such as iSell? Penny Crossland also updates on developments at Infogroup.

  • Battling Digital Distraction
By James Mullan on Thursday, 20th December 2012
Individuals working in legal and other firms are facing a big problem at the moment, a new disease that is affecting a lot of workers. The name of this new disease: "inefficiency". Whilst you might not be surprised that this is a problem, the cause of the problem, new technologies and the resultant 'digital distraction', may be unexpected.

  • How Intranets can Help with Ambient Awareness
By James Mullan on Wednesday, 19th December 2012
Sharing small snippets of information about our daily lives and what we're doing has been a key feature of social networking tools for a number of years. More recently, organisations have started to look at how activity streams, status updates and microblogging tools like Yammer, Salesforce and Pulse could be used to surface content and details about individuals. Being aware of what an individual is doing through the use of social networking tools is usually referred to as ambient awareness and intranets have a big role to play in helping to develop this.
